Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, I had to wake up at 4am for work, so I could not stay all night reading. I really haven't gotten to "play" with it much. My goal for tonight is to download a book that just came out today and find the app and games, and figure out how to access the net, and maybe even check out the magazine selection and blogs.

Being a Kindle owner is a big deal. You should feel very proud.

I love my Kindle but it really isn't that big of a deal. You should buy an e-reader that fits your needs. If that is a Sony then great. I think that some of the defensiveness on the board is because far too many of us are far too invested in a particular brand.

We have a general affinity to make brands part of us. For example some people believe luxury vehicles are part of their persona.

I've never been a fan or brand-fandom. The Kindle is just a means to an end (reading books). That's it.

My post above yours may have had some sprinkles of sarcasm.

You never feel brand loyalty to anything? Really? Come on, now.

As for me, Amazon has my number. I love my Kindle; I love Amazon's customer service; I find more and more uses for my Kindle all the time; I take my Kindle almost everywhere; and I'm completely willing to overlook the whole lack-of-ePub-support issue, considering the awesome that is Calibre.

Also, if one more person replies to my saying just how easy it is to get around the ePub issue and says "but removing DRM is illegal" again, I think I may scream.

:
I never said that.

I purchased a BMW two years ago, and for the first year I was a fan boy, and a BMW fan, until it came time for BMW to fix something which warranty should have covered. They found a tiny loophole and didn't want to pay for it. I called BMW North America who deferred me to the local dealer.
I then realized that to BMW I was a means to an end, making money.

I think my brand loyalty came as a result of me wanting to feel justified or feel good about buying the car. Brand loyalty to me (now) makes no sense. If some Chinese company comes up with a better e-reader than Kindle, I'll buy it.

True. I will buy Toyota's forever for this reason. Sure, people say "buy American made" as I live here, but Toyota is better so that's what I'm doing. I mean really, my wife's car from college had over 250k miles on it before it died, and up until the end, it didn't have many problems at all really.

One thing about Amazon Kindle though that I also consider important is the volume of good ebooks. I compare this to Nintendo. Back in the day of the console wars between Nintendo and Sega, Sega had nicer hardware in the Genesis/Megadrive while the NES was still out. However, Nintendo won out. Why? Many people say that it's primarily due to the large library of good games that the NES had.

Same with Kindle. Amazon has the biggest bookstore of quality books, so I still give them the leading edge in this competition.
