I was doing my due diligence and using the Search, to see if the question had a thread, so as not to open one
Didn't want to spam front page with threads that would have been asked many times. (See many replies saying "this has been asked many times before" However I see your point - a loose loose situation I guess. So in this case, was it OK to reopen this one, or has there been changes regarding Caliber's handling of Authors and their pen-names |

In my opinion, in this particular case I think it was perfectly fine to add to this old thread. The thread isn't discussing a particular calibre feature/bug - instead it is asking for how people approach a particular issue. Your post didn't repeat anything that had been previously said and I think it is quite a clever suggestion. Unlike certain other topics there aren't loads of threads discussing the subject so I am sure future users would appreciate finding a range of suggestions in one thread.
Of course where things go wrong with posting on old threads is when they discuss calibre limitations, feature requests or bugs that are no longer relevant due to Calibre being updated so frequently. You did the due diligence by searching first, there wasn't a more recent thread you could find and the subject isn't one that is likely to involve a change in calibre any time soon that would obsolete the suggestions on it. But dwanthny may disagree of course - it is less often I post outside the plugins subforum nowadays and he is one of the mods here. I just think that in this case creating a new post just to make your comment offers less value to future users browsing the forums than adding it to this thread which discusses the other alternatives ![]() |

I lean towards Kiwidude on this particular topic.
99% of the time it IS an old/obsolete topic for the reasons mentioned. I think this would need to be done deep within the author (table,Link) structure. (Declare name to be a alternate for Author) I just have not come up with the Logic to maintain the Author (pen name, alternate spelling)<-> real name linkage. Andre Alice Norton Alice Mary Norton ,Andre Norton, Andrew North and Allen Weston The intent to leave the metadata intact, but a Author search would bring up any form |

My two pence (had the idea reading this thread, have not tried yet, but think it works):
1. Enter real name to comments 2. Add tag like 'psevdo' (or whatever, as long as it is not likely to come in among somebody else's tags; or make new column) 3. Assign color to author's name if the tag is present. So that if I see (blue) name, I look in comments, copy the real name, paste it to search and get all the books where the real name is in comments or author field. Added benefit: I don't get books praised by or compared to pen-names. |
