To be fair, most movies are cast based on the 'pull' or the 'price' of the actor I would have thought.....McC is cheap

I remember shuddering at the casting of John Hannah in the Rebus series, and he was dreadful but Robson Green in Wire in the Blood was also one I wasn't sure of and he got it right in my view.

finally saw the movie, and MM didn't do a bad job.

movie followed the book pretty well and was very good overall.
