"A stale part" is something completely different from "a role in an old play"- KWIM? The whole paragraph is full of examples like that. The Maude language has power of expression that the other one totally lacks.

And now I'll duck out again, because I'm actually not intending to read the book anytime soon... too much else on the go already... Y'all have fun with whichever version you choose.
