Sainsbury's sell e-book readers, but apparently not e-books. Likewise ASDA Direct, including an Elonex 7 inch colour PDF & ePub e-book reader for 75 GBP , plus tablets - including the Samsung Galaxy Tab for 437 GBP.

Unbelievable.
It would never occur to me to look for ebook reader on a supermarket's website.

How about Pharmacies/Drug Stores?
Or upscale clothing stores?
Or auto part stores?
Or Banks?

All of the above are happening right now.
Any day now, you'll be stopped by trenchcoated guys in alleys offering up their own brand of ebook reader.

It's not really that odd to see small electronics showing up in odd places; back in the days of the Home Computer wars the TI99 and Timex-Sinclair showed up everywhere except Girl Scout cookie drives. (And I may have simply missed it when it happened.)

It's part and parcel of the mainstreaming and commoditization of new technologies. Once a product stops being targetted at hobbyists and early adopters availability explodes as thousands of vendors jump into the new market, each seeking a 5% share of the market leading up to a collapse/consolidation as the natural size of the product's market reveals itself. Consolidation doesn't usually take place at once, by the way; rather it happens in waves. As early losers drop out, new players pop in, reinflating the bubble until the next market reset.

It can take a while before the long term winners are revealed and until then hope reigns supreme. So sit back and enjoy the show; the fun's just starting.

Hopefully the economies of scale will result in lower prices for end-users.

I popped into my local newly-refurbished Currys PC World amalgam, and saw e-readers from 5 or 6 different manufacturers on display (including the Kindle). It was great to be able to compare so many, and be able to physically play with them. The Kindle went up in my estimation, not feeling cheap or flimsy.

I was going to buy the tiny 5" Sony, and a Kindle, but managed to get out of the store before I splurged.

I'm not sure having a PRS 600 listed as "Out of stock" on your website - and no other reading devices listed - counts as selling e-book readers.

John Lewis were on the ball - they had Kindles in store before Christmas. They've always sold the Sonys.

I concur; this certainly seems to be the case now. Oh well ...

Are they selling Kindles at all Tescos, or just ones in cities? The only Tescos I've shopped at have been in London, where they sell lots of deli-type food to office types and they're in the heart of public transit. That kinda setting makes sense for e-reader sales.

In the western U.S., Tesco owns the Fresh & Easy supermarket chain. Dunno whether they're selling Kindles, but I doubt it.

It's the "superstores" rather than the purely food ones. My local Tesco is one that sells only food, but there's a much larger one in a nearby town that sells absolutely everything, so I'd guess they'd be selling the Kindle. When I'm next there I'll call in and look.

Sounds like a Target or Wal-Mart setting. That makes sense.

I live in quie small town near Glasgow, and the Tesco (24 hrs) is slling it as well. I am really tempeted to buy one, although I have a Sony 600. Thank god there isn't one to try on and also that my wife would kill me if I buy another eReader.

Did you happen to notice if they sell the covers with the built-in light as well? I'm planning a trip to the UK for Easter and instant gratification sounds good to me...

I posted a while ago about Kindle appearing in Tesco - but it was the iPad/iPod for sale in Marks & Spencer that caught my eye before Christmas ....
