I had already upgraded my NC using the ClockworkMod system. But there are many many people who have not already hacked their NCs and now had version 1.1.0 firmware. May I ask what should these people do? Don't forget there are new people every day joining the rooting fold. That is why, I re-did mine, I actually read posts where people had been told to go back to version 1.0.0 firmware then move to 1.0.1, then use autonooter then use the CWM method.

I did mine, for two reasons, 1/ I wanted a nice clean install again (I had been putting any and every new hack that came alone on it) and 2/ so someone here could tell the new people... "yes kiddies it does work" Even the OP in other threads, had ClockworkMod mention with this system, so any new person may be confused ( I was getting confused with all the different threads and advice)

SO please remember there are many people who come to these forums looking for information on rooting and don't know all the terms and just need a nice simple answer and system.

While there is no guarantee that there will be a painless pre-rooted update path for future upgrades, this has often been the case on some other android platforms. You would have to wait and see if a friendly hacker makes one available, so there may be lag between BN update and painless-update for your rooted device. But I wouldn't count on it, just be happy if it happens.

Also what about your book shelves, or ADE files? Are all these preserved as well?
Yes.

Makes me wonder why would anyone autonooter, if this is so perfect.
Well, do read the clockwork summary, it lists the disadvantages.

Here are some possible restore failure cases:
  1. Clockwork install is corrupted. This is what probably happened to Volwrath -- he had to repair his recovery partition and his backup had mismatched md5 (so it was probably a bad backup). It's probably worth it to test your restore before assuming you have a good clockwork install.
  2. Your BN keys get updated. The restore puts back all data. If you BN keys get changed (say you deregister and re-register) you have bad BN data in your backup. You may be able to clear this (there are XDA instructions), but it will mean your restore won't be perfect.
  3. You wait too long between backups. Should go without saying, but people do forget. ROM Manager does have the option to do scheduled backups, but they take up a lot of SD card space and I haven't personally tested them on the Nook, myself.
  4. There is a bug in clockwork mod and it won't restore your particular backup (a good reason to try restores now and then).

That would be me. I have hacked the kindle many times, but the Nook seems a little more challenging. But when my nook arrives (and iandix, I see we haunt the same forums) I will need simple advice. I have fiddled with the classic nook and liked it, but the day I was in the store, that was day of the announcement of the colour nook, so I didnt buy it in the States. And getting it to Australia takes a while. Should be here next week though.

I'm not sure there is one best answer (and it changes -- yesterday, a version of an autonooter for 1.1 came out) Given what I know right now, if a friend had a new Nook with 1.1.0 installed, this is what I would tell them to do today:
  1. Make sure to fully test the device and register with BN
  2. Use GMPower's new autonooter for 1.1
  3. Before you reboot, format your SD card (yes, the one you used to root) using the Nook.
  4. Test android and BN functions, fully.
  5. Read and ask in this forum for android setup tips, post install troubleshooting and get a nice working state.
  6. Download ROM Manager, install Clockwork, install a freshly formated SD card with at least 1G free memory, make a nandroid backup. Test restore.

if I live outside the USA and have no intention of buying books from B&N, and for some reason I am unable to register because of a say a wifi issue with my WEP code on the router, is there any reason why I have to register it before I apply the root? Will everything still work? I realize I will have to side load books and I think they won't appear on the home page, but any other likely issues with a non registered nook with a root?

Thanks, that was precisely what I have been looking for....

I went to the "Install Directions" and got bogged down in 131 pages of version numbers and installs...Its clear as mud to me..!! I'm still studying all the recent entries..but thanks for steering us (me) in the right direction..

Thanks Zartemis. Your posts are extremely detailed and to the point. For me I can clearly see the differences between the two approaches.

Clockwork I believe would appeal to those who like to play around with lots of different setups and experiment, which I think is great. If it doesn't work out just return to your previous save quickly. However it does seem to require a bit of work, regular backups.

I'm looking for a bit more stable setup. If B&N had opened the app market I wouldn't even be interested in rooting. So I'm waiting for them to do their big firmware upgrade, hopefully in the next two months. Then I will do whatever autonooter there is and be done with it for a while.

Thanks again for clearing things up for a lot of us.

Ain't that the truth. The nice thing about our mobileread forum is that it is OK to re-ask questions here -- we'll answer them again instead of thinking you should have read post 1292 in some 150 page thread out of dozens with similar names. If you get stuck, just start a new thread here or post in what seems an appropriate one.

I noticed that huskermania has updated his rooting video to cover the GMPower autonooter I recommended above. So if you have 15 minutes, you can watch someone else root their nook and talk about what they are doing as they do it.

I honestly don't know. Seems like it should work, but maybe the Nook keeps trying to register and reboot/restore itself. Or only does this if you launch a BN app. But you could try and restore to stock if it turns out there is a problem.

If you root, you'll probably want to install an alternate launcher and then you can put your sideloaded books on the home page.

By already downloaded, you mean the video? Yes, you are correct, the only thing that has changed is which file you use to make the SD card and he added the link in his video description text. Sorry, didn't mean to imply that the video itself changed. It didn't need to; the process is exactly the same.
