It's some sort of plastic that extends from the leather cover over the entire back side. I would think the weakest link would be the stitching. If you want true long term durability maybe see if there are any 100% leather covers out there.

Ah, that's a great suggestion. Might see if that would suit better. I am actually finding that the Sony covers are somewhat hard to find. I guess I am late to the game on those

My bad, that was the rumor during the crazy price drop. Sony's pricing strategy on this unit makes absolutely no sense. It's already back up to full price!

Well, at least for the 650, both lighted and nonlighted versions appear to be discontinued and unavailable. The 650 reader itself is kind of a rare find too. (Supply issues, it seems?)

I called the nearest Sony store and asked if they had any covers in stock, and there is one lighted cover available, so I asked them to put it aside for me. It was the last though! Looks like I'll be making the trek out there today.

Getting back to the 350, the covers still seem very available.
