I just use the Sony Library software and ADE for those that need it. I've never bought from the Sony bookstore. I find the Sony software pretty intuitive. Somewhere near the bottom of the list on the left you should see Computer. Follow the folders just as you would in windows explorer until you get to the folder with your books. Then drag and drop. You can do multiple selections at a time.

Does Calibre do a good job of converting PDF files to something nicely redable on an ereader?

Nothing will do a good job of converting from PDF. PDF is a "terminal format" - ie, a format that's designed to be converted "to", not "from". It's extremely difficult to convert from PDF to an eBook format.

The Sony Reader also doesn't read .Lit files right?

And, if not, does Calibre convert from .Lit effectively?

It does. On the Calibre list of best source files, it's number one.

What would be the preferred format to convert TO from the .Lit file, for the Sony 350?

Check out Apprentice Alf's blog. If you are comfortable with stripping DRM you will be able to buy books wherever you want and put them on your Sony. It is easy to do.

Per the my helpful readers here at mobileread, I've been converting my files to lrf(the Sony proprietary format) via Calibre and they've all bee very readable. I think the source files were mostly lit and pdf and the only conversion problem is the occasional page with only 1 or 2 words on them, but I'm sure there's an option in Calibre to figure that out,but since it's happened on maybe 5 pages from all the books I've read on the 350, it's not a big issue. Per the whole case thing, I picked up a free one from Best Buy, the Targus fake leather sleeve. I don't love it, but it allows me to carry the reader to work with me and at least it was free. It was the only one they had in the store though so ymmv.

I like to convert to epub. Works well on the sony and most other devices. The sony can also handle your pdf's as is.
