Apple Pulling the Plug on Reader Apps?

If Microsoft pulled a stunt like that, there's be lawsuits. But when it's Apple, well it's just different, isn't it?

Another reason why I will never ever buy any Apple products - they are proprietary.

This is really the consumers fault. If people would stop falling for the Apple business model, they simply could not get away with it. People are so gullible…

I thought that the Kindle App for Apple products required that you leave the app in order to buy books?

Or they really like Apple products. I use an IPod because it is easy to use and it is what I know. I don't see myself changing my MP3 player anytime soon for that reason.

I don't use Apple computers and phones and tablets because I don't find Apple products all that intuitive, I don't think they play well with others, and because I think they are far too expensive for what they are.

Just because I feel that way doesn't mean that other folks don't love them and think they are cool.

I do think there is a little too much "Apple product X is cool so I have to have it" but I am sure there are people who look at me and my Kindle and say the same thing.

My attitude is to wait and see. There will more than likely be a follow up article in the near future outlining what exactly happened and why the app was rejected and how Sony did what Apple was asking and now they are best buds. In the mean time, everyone gets all excited. I blame New Journalism for running with a half baked and unresearched story, rather than there being a grand Conspiracy going on.

Ohnoes! The sky is falling down!

Let's just remind ourselves that Apple is primarily a hardware company, and Apps from Amazon, Kobo, B&N where available etc.. etc.. all help drive hardware sales, so I don't believe for a second that Apple would cut them off - why would they?? Oh wait, I forgot; they're greedy. And evil, right? And closed, let's not forget closed...

From the TechCrunch article linked to earlier:-

Quote:
"There seems to be this desire to paint Apple’s relatively closed system as “evil” in some way. But the reality, of course, is that it’s not evil. If anything, it has just proven to be good business. In fact, one of the most successful business models ever.

Sony’s statement sounds as if that they were looking forward to taking advantage of the success of the iPad to bolster their own struggling e-book products. But it’s not like they can sell their books on the Kindle either. Instead, the Kindle exists so Amazon can move their own products. And no one is calling Amazon “evil” because of it.

The larger public simply doesn’t care about this whole open versus closed debate. And it doesn’t really seem like developers actually making the apps do either. But the press certainly seems to for some reason. We get so damn angry about things like this — when we read them on our iPads."
Never thought I'd see TechCrunch as the 'voice of reason' but there you go...
