Createspace is an Amazon company but it seems like anyone can publish something in the Amazon stores using it. Kind of strange and I wonder why most publishers aren't aware of/policing it. Or why Amazon isn't. But maybe I'm overthinking it per usual. ; )
I'm not sure which publisher currently holds the rights to the Mary Stewart Arthurian books (Harper I think but not sure). It sure would be great if they just released official ebooks! I have to admit that I'm a bit torn - I love these books so much but HATE the fact that they're not legit copies. This version does have links at the beginning to each of the books, epilogue, legend, author's note, et cetera for anyone who wants to know... ![]() Heck, their work is done for them and has been out there for nearly a year. Why not just take 30 minutes to grab these books, add a jacket, and put them up themselves? If it's not her, then it annoys me so much that she/they haven't made the books available, it's hard not to wish a pox on 'em all. ![]() |

Mary Stewart is 94 years old and lives in England. There are a lot of English authors whose works are not available as ebooks in the US. Mary Stewart's work is probably considered backlist by the US publishers, and just hasn't been up for contract renegotiation and conversion to ebook. Given her age and that she's English, her agent's probably just not been pushing for it, either.

This is why Amazon needs to manually approve eBooks instead of letting them just be published willy nilly. Then maybe we would not have had that guide to being a pedophile published.

There is, of course, a difference between checking books for copyright (which apparently can be bypassed by going thru Createspace, as this person has now done at least four times, from the reviews he/she posted (all the others were yanked, three of them were this same author) and censoring books for content (not that the book in question might not have violated Amazon's other rules, as I sure many, many others do).

So I saw this version and decided to check it out. It's identical to the fan made scan/ocr.
It made me wonder why it's still up and realized amazon makes $3 off each purchase, even it is a pirated version. Curious how much money amazon makes by selling pirated books. |

It's probably still up because no one at the publisher that has the rights has sent Amazon a take down notice (and if the author has the rights, she likely has no clue it is up for sale).
This same seller has had two others by the same author (and this same book) removed by Amazon so far, as well as another book that appeared to still be in copyright. I suspect this one will be removed eventually, as well (sooner, perhaps, if the publisher got enough feedback emails on it about concerns over it being an unauthorized publication/copyright violation). |

I have a friend that works at Harper so I sent her an e-mail about this. Who knows if it'll even matter if this people have found a way to circumvent the systems. I know that many publishers have only recently begun establishing "departments" (often only 1 person) who is responsible for digital rights. I can only imagine that with the many tens of hundreds of thousands of books in print it will take a while for each and every book to be made available through official channels. Sad for me since I like some pretty obscure authors! So it's up to book nerds like us to see what's out there and discuss at GREAT length. : )
I did buy this version to find out more about it. It was really hard to contact Amazon to let them know that this was a potentially illegal copy and return it. I love(d) these books so much! But having worked in publishing I know how important it is to give my money to official channels to keep at least some money going to the artist. How I feel about how the money gets filtered out is a different subject entirely! Fingers crossed that this series gets the official digital treatment soon- I saw that some of her other books were being reissued in the coming months so there is hope... |

And yes, I've clicked some "Tell the Publisher" buttons on Amazon, although I'm never quite sure if that really does any good ![]() |

I know this is an old thread, but it is rather amazing that here we are in the year 2019 and still no official release of her Arthurian series while her other novels seem to have been put out in what looks to be legit versions. In the UK, there are what look to be official e-versions, and i would love to have purchased these, but held back when I was there, as I needed the money to save and see Stonehenge.
I would buy the legit versions; I am not at all interested in pirated copies; and i would also like to see T.H. White's Sword in the stone with the additional chapters that were excised for the Once and Future King. So much potential to market these gems in the e-format! |

Now if you want to buy them, you can go to Kobo and cross the border into the UK and buy them from Kobo. It's actually very easy to do. |
