Before I got out my surgical tools I figured that, to be thorough I had to really give the
process that Ron used to get his stuck JBL back, a good try. After many more than the
ten tries Ron mentioned, and with the batteries removed and using the USB cable, I am
now getting to the "book pile page" sometimes and XP seeing the device long enough to
offer me the auto load options. (This makes it look more and more like a fault in the
response to corrupt memory or other error handling breakdown.) It is not getting to the
book pile in a normal timing yet or in a consistent manner.

Luck;
Ken

Interesting.

Apparently I likes the weather down there better.

Well, I haven't gotten the pile of books back in a while now and I never got past that.
(Actually, we have some real cold right now, but it's a dry cold, don't ya know.)

It's interesting that when it did get to the pile of books at that same time XP recognizes
the device for a second or two. Also, while it doesn't read anything from the device in
the time it is recognized, XP didn't issue another warning that it couldn't detect an attached USB device, either. Some of this should mean something, but I haven't figured
out what, yet. Even if I do though, all I can do is let Ectaco know what I think the
problem might be.

Luck;
Ken

When mine froze and I recovered it by persistence, as soon as the USB was able to connect (I think it was when the book pile showed up), I did a chkdsk and a firmware reload and it seemed to fix it. (CHKDSK: right click device in My Computer, Properties- Tools Tab, Error check-checking top box only).

What's weird about all this is that when the unit freezes, the ONLY thing that works is auto-shutoff- and the unit needs TIME to recover, even if the status light looks like it is not doing anything at all. I'm setting mine to 30 min (Max) just to be safe since I shut it off manually anyway.

I am happy to see we have consensus on what this thing is doing. I do not believe it is a hardware issue. The reset button, or a reset/other key combination should be configured to do a lower level reset- even if it results in having to reload the firmware. Beats sending it back, and Ectaco would save money. But I posted some of this on Ectaco's forum, and Jerry from Ectaco came back with a statistic on how few of these come back for warranty service, so I guess they are happy with things the way they are- they certainly do not hedge when you need to return one.
