I mainly read IT and computer books, even non-fiction books. I usually read those slow and by chapters so I can fully digest and understand its content. Let's say weeks of even a month.
If I'm reading a novel, I usually finish it in couple of hours or days, depending of my motivation and available time. |

I usually have more than one book going at a time. I read relatively fast when reading fiction. Computer books are different.

I am reading novels, mainly mysteries, and at the rate of somewhere over 50 per year ... I think that 100 is possible but unlikely. I generally and, yes on principle, read books all the way through to the end; but I am not above making exceptions. If I am finding a book not to my taste, I generally interrupt it with something else for a day or two and then try returning for another chapter -- sometimes that gets me over the hump. Bus sometimes I just don't return.

If I'm really liking a book, I average 80-100 pages per day. I usually only read late in the evening after everything else is done. If a book is good but not riveting, I read less than that. If I'm having trouble getting into a book, it slows down considerably. If it's really bad I won't finish it, but most of the time I stick it out in the hopes it will get better. It's not so much about reading speed but how long I can get lost in it without wandering off to do other things.
I rarely have more than one book going at a time, and if I do, it's generally one fiction and one non-fiction. I prefer to stick to one story world at a time. |

Cool thread, Quexos.
![]() I normally read one book at a time. Very rarely, I'll have two going. As far as aborting a book I know I'm just not into...no qualms. I aborted my 3rd book of this year today: "Lolita". Great wordsmithing, but I'd rather not have to have a French phrasebook handy to comprehend it. |

I don't force myself to finish books any more - there are too many good books out there to waste time on the bad ones. Usually it's bad writing that sees me put the book down quickly - an uninteresting (to me) plot I will give more time. I usually have a few books on the go at any time, at least one serious (fic or non-fic) and one or two light in different genres. |

I read 3 to 5 books a week and usually have 4 or 5 books on the go at a time. I wont read 2 books of the same genre at a time so usually have a SF, fantasy, bio, cycling and Buddhist book on the go at one time. That is beside the photography manuals and software manuals I go through at work.
I would think that is all pretty normal for a lot of people on this forum. |

I start at the beginning and go to the end with no looking at the last page. I've always been a very fast reader..maybe it's a South Australian thing?-, but I no longer feel I have to finish everything I start as I once did. I'm currently reading Atlantic by Simon Winchester, a huge book which deserves careful reading; when I need a bit of light relief I'm alternating it with EF Benson's Miss Mapp.. an old friend.
There are courses you can take to improve the speed of your reading if you want, worked for my husband. Anne |

I am a very slow reader, partly because of poor health, which nowadays often makes reading difficult, but I have never been a particularly fast reader. I have always considered myself to be a contemplative reader, though. I spend a lot of time thinking about the words that are used, and the way a book has been written, as much as its subject matter.
I often interrupt my reading, to do some research on some aspect of the subject, or the language used, so that slows my reading of books, as well. Naturally, there are other distractions, as I read a whole host of other things, such as news on-line, downloaded magazines, and so on - not to mention MR! I am perfectly happy being a slow reader and really would not want to speed read. For me, part of the pleasure of reading is enjoying all the aspects that I have described above. I always have one e-book plus at least one p-book on the go, at the same time. I often refer to p-books, when reading e-books, and vice versa. I always read books from beginning to end, but sometimes skim-read sections that I find tedious, or boring, though that's quite unusual. |

I usually have 2 or 3 things at a time that I am reading. With my new Nook that has taken a quantum leap upwards to maybe 6 or 7 simultaneous reads. My favorite thing about the e-reader is that it always remembers where I left off. I read pretty fast and can easily polish off a book in a day. But I really enjoy going from one to another as the mood takes me. After 8 pm it is pretty much book time.

When I read a book for the first time I read it from start to finish in one sitting. For that reason I prefer shorter novels (less than 300 pages) which I can easily finish in a couple of hours. I won't start longer books (600 - 700 pages) unless I know I will have enough time to finish - I usually allow about an hour per 100 pages but after a big session (anything more than 6 hours) my eyes are so fatigued that I try to limit how many longer books I read.
Yeah I know I could take a break but I don't... If I am not enjoying a book and I put it down I am unlikely to return to it. When I reread a book (which I do often if I have enjoyed it) I can start and stop at any point in the book and I often will have up to 10 different books that I am rereading at any time. |

For most of my life I was reading one book at a time, starting at the first page, reading to the end, then picking up another book. But in the last years my reading habits have changed. Even before I had an e-reader I started carrying two books in my bag so that I could switch during long métro rides, or read one book on the way to work and another on the way home.
With e-books my habits have become even more disorganized. I now read at least two books, plus I insert a short story now and then from some collections that I have. I can be reading up to 4 or 5 books in parallel, often it's one fiction and one non-fiction but there are no set rules. I have never hesitated to stop reading a book that I really hate, but with the number of free books available in e-form, I tend to sometimes pick up a free book on a whim and lose interest after a while, which is something I didn't do before. I don't have as much invested in a book I picked up because it was free, as in a book I bought, usually after reading at least a few reviews and often an excerpt. |

It's really too early for me to say how ebooks will affect my reading habits, so what follows relates to my reading habits BK (Before Kindle). I can have up to about 10 books on the go simultaneously. One is my teeth book -- the one propped by the washbasin which gets read only when I am doing my teeth. I timed myself and a large hardback history book took months to finish because this was how I read it.
Speed of reading can vary depending on content and circumstances. Most fiction drives one forward with narrative momentum, but with NF or poetry I might go back and reread a chunk and think about it before continuing. I might stop to scribble notes. If I read in French, I manage about one-third of my normal speed in English. I normally expect to finish one new book a week on average. But I may well also be rereading other books within the same time. With fiction, I normally read straight through or give up altogether. The record, for being given up on the first page, is held jointly by Jeffrey Archer and Dan Brown (I bought paperbacks of both because I was told they were good.) |

I'm not a particularly fast reader, I tend to read 2 or 3 books a week when I'm not busy with work, which is most of the time, but usually 1 a week. This doesn't include the reading I do daily for my clients. I tend to read general fiction, although lately I have been revisiting Sci-Fi books that I read in my youth.
