Must be an individual thing. I'm also in IT, also with 20+ years experience. My livelihood depends on me being able to read and comprehend large quantities of textual data displayed on a LCD, I find the NC very easy to read and comfortable even using fonts at half the size that I would use on my primary. Monitor.

Other than in bright sunlight, I tend to like it with the backlight pretty low. My nook is rooted and I use the adjbrightness app to allow lower backlight levels than the darkest stock setting. In a dark room I actually use it somewhere between 7 and 10 and find that quite comfortable and not straining on my eyes whereas I might get annoyed even using the lowest stock setting. |

Personally for me the NC is a much nicer reader than anything else I have used. And I live in the Seattle area (kindle country) |

Kind of a ironic that you are also an IT guy. I truly recommend you a Kindle 3 or even better, a Kindle DX. I can find all my IT and database books in Amazon o even O'reilly, which also sells in mobi format. |

But I cannot go back to slow page turns and even slower font size changes. Plus getting notification about new emails while reading in areas with wi-fi is awesome by itself. My NC is here to stay with me. |

what do you have your brightness to? Have you played around with different color backgrounds? I have my brightness set to around 20 to 30% and I like sepia, though I'm using normal right now. but sepia is my overall favorite. also try Gray, that's a good one too. |

I'm one of those whom the backlight has never bothered, either. I put my brightness on the dimmest setting, and I use an anti-glare screen protector. I can read for hours on it. No problems here.

I've been reading this thread with interest because I'm in the same boat with some others. In IT, in front of the LCD for the better part of the day, yada, yada, yada. I also have a Sony 650 but I don't read any less on the Nook than I did on the Sony. Maybe I'm just used to it because I'm in front of the screen all day anyway. Yes, I do take breaks from the LCD in general, including the Nook, but not because I *have* to, but because it's recommended.
As for the iPad debate, all I can say is that I was looking to buy one even before I bought the Sony. At the time I didn't think that the benefits were worth the price tag. I just wanted a reader. The Sony fitted that bill perfectly and recently I bought the nook for the ability to read in the dark. The fact that I can root it (eventually) and get some extras out of it is a pure bonus. It feels like I'm getting a lot of features for what I paid for. Had I bought the iPad, I'd feel ripped-off. Here in Canada, the Sony retails for $250 and the cheapest iPad retails for $550. I paid $250 for the Nook. In Price vs Benefit it's a no-brainer. Your mileage may vary. |
