It's all XML at that level, and surprisingly readable, you might want to have a look at it just out of curiosity, tekchic. The adjustments there are pretty trivial to make, and even to figure out how to make.
I tried to go one step further by making a battery level indicator between 0-100% to get a more accurate reading than the four blocks. I wrote some script and tested it on my fully charged Reader. It said: "100%". I was full of joy and started flipping pages like there was no tomorrow. Only to find out that when the first block dropped my indicator showed "74%". That gave the answer why it took so long before it wend below 100%. Well back to the drawing board.

Good try though, diabloNL. That would have rocked if it had worked.

I thought about creating an algorithm based on screen refreshes and idle time. But I don't want to get problems with people that take their reader on the go and think: "Great! Still 35% left so no need for a re-charge" only to find out the battery is really close to scream: "Hey man! You are running me flat. How about some juice?"

Well I wrote (big word for small tweak) it, but who am I?

No seriously, the joystick mod is in the application.xml and not the main.xml.

So maybe they could give us a configurable option for a folder view (or better yet, the 10-button hack I've described a few times before). That way it could be OFF by default (and so give the 'dummy view' that you suggest Sony is shooting for), but could be turned ON by those of us who are techie-enough to both understand and desire a more complex interface.

I don't want it to work that way . I like it just fine the way it is, with the joystick navigating the "history list". History is very useful if, for example, you temporarily look something up that you've marked with a bookmark, and want to quickly go back to where you were.

That's why I only changed the "right" function on the jog stick to change pages on my own Reader. I left the "left" one as a "back" function in the history. It means that I can use it to back up when I jump to another page (usually I hit one of the number buttons rather than deliberately doing so for some good reason), but I can still go to the next page with the jogstick, which I really like.

To each his own -- I'm just glad I can make the adjustment I want, I don't need everyone else to make it for it to be useful to me.

I hope that there will be an update soon, but I haven't exactly seen any indications that Sony is actively working on any. It sure would be nice though.

My biggest wish is for them to support collections on the external memory chip. If they do that, then I can work around all the other annoyances. The other thing that I would like is to have is in the author view, to show an author only once and when you select that author, give a list of the books by that author. Support by categories would be nice also.

I suspect when they were first designing it, they thought that everyone would only have a hand full of books on the device at a time. While certainly some people work that way, I prefer to load all their books on the device so they can read whatever strikes their fancy at the time. I'm the same way with my iPod, I like to have all my music available so I can listen to whatever I'm in the mood for. I suspect that I am not alone in that regard.

I think that perhaps they didn't suspect anything but originally programmed it simply in order to see what sorts of suggestions/complaints/desires came forth from early adopters.

They may have thought (I realize I may be giving them far more credit than they deserve, but what they heck, it's a terrific product, so they obviously know what they're doing) that if they made things more complicated (allowing collections on memory cards, incorporating folder views, user-configurable controls, etc) that they might end up changing those to accommodate suggestions and improvements. Those changes might have left those who got into the original configurations complaining about how what had formerly worked was now broken. This way, without any such complications originally, as they add them they can more accurately reflect the desires of the installed user base and not antagonize people by changing what wasn't broken to begin with.
