They stopped selling them online, but I found one at Target for $34. It cost an extra 8 bucks overall, but it's really the best case if you want something simple with no goofy stuff around the edges.
That was for a gift Kindle. I've had my amazon non-lighted cover for 8 or 9 months, no problem at all. Maybe fingernail polish would suffice to cover any exposed metal, on the rail hooks. The issue I've heard about sounds like unintended shorting of something eletrical inside that the lower hook is contacting. Is this the "problem" people are referring to? |

Yes I put scotch tape on the back of the lower hook like Starko suggested in this and another forum, and I have had no reboot or freeze issues since I did it a month ago.

Apparently, the, is it, Kate Spade covers with the official Amazon binding/hooks is also causing problems.
Could it be that Amazon did one of those "silent" upgrades where they may have changed manufacturing tolerances or parts' suppliers on the kindle itself which could also be the issue. |

I have a non lighted cover and have had problems. I am going with the static charge build up theory since I always had a freeze when putting my Kindle in my winter jacket pocket. As suggested in other threads I sanded the paint off the hooks and have had no problems. Since the Kindle is now connected electrically to the case, no static discharge into the Kindle. I am against putting anything on the hooks for fear of damaging the contacts in the Kindle, just in case I get a lighted case. I am curious if those who have reported no problems live in more humid climates.

I might be completely off topic but we used to have an un-lighted cover for our Kindle3 and it never caused any problems. However, after we tried the lighted cover on a relative's Kindle, we were "converted". I got my husband an Amazon leather cover with a built-in light for Christmas, and he absolutely loves it! It's really not much bulkier or heavier than the un-lighted one. It allows us to read the Kindle even in the middle of the night without bothering anybody with the night light. We've found it worth the extra buck. Just sharing our experience on both types of covers

I got a lighted cover "gratis" from Amazon and now i can't imagine using any reader without light ever again. As Mozaika wrote there is hardly any weight or volume difference between the two, but the convenience of having a light at any time ... i love it and it seems that i use light 60% of the time. Of course it's winter now, in summer it might be less.

In the latest episode of The Kindle Chronicles podcast, this very topic is addressed. (Though not much time is dedicated to it.)
The Kindle Chronicles Ep. 133 One person came up with a solution I had been thinking about myself...velcro. Velcro certainly works for Oberon covers; why not the Amazon cover as well? The submitter to the podcast said he used a hacksaw...I was thinking tin snips and a file, but whatever works sounds great to me. |

i had my unlighed cover about 3 weeks and then the problems started . frequent freezes . amazon was very understanding as they basically gave me the lighted cover for free . i bought some liquid electrical tape and going to see if i can coat the hinges that go into the book. i like the unlighted one and the clip on light i bought for it . hopefully the liquid tape will work .

I guess I could look but is Amazon selling the UNlighted cover again or is it still off their site? A quick look shows it is still NOT available. Must be a more, ahem, interesting problem than originally thought.
