Why bother adding more formats when the primary format (ePub) need some serious work?

Because the ePub rendering engine in Stanza leaves a lot to be desired.

Apparently the PRS-300 and the PRS-505 can use this drop-in firmware to read PDF, DOC, EPUB, RTF, HTML, CHM, TXT, DJVU, FB2, PDB, PRC, TCR, ZIP and multifile ZIP.

I'm happy with PRS+ on my 505 but might give this a try on my kids 300. Has anyone given this a go yet?

I played with it on my PRS-300 briefly and then took it off. It has more features than the standard Sony firmware but the interface is still pretty clunky and doesn't support many of the reader's buttons (changing font size requires you to back out of the book, go into settings, change the size, and then go back into the book -- the font size button on the reader doesn't work).

I'm keeping an eye on this because the PRS-300 uses an ancient version of ADE that doesn't justify epub books and LRF is basically dead. For now I'm using the Sony firmware and converting to LRF but if this gets better I may put it back on.

Edit: What I said above was true for the last version. I just installed 1.6.1.0 and the font size button now works while reading a book. There are still a few fit and finish type issues that are annoying (no margin control other than whatever's in the book, the Home button doesn't always go Home like you'd expect, lack of loading info except when opening a book, etc). I also had a few issues with flipping back and forth between the Sony firmware and this (I had to reset to get into the new firmware, which cleared the clock. The only way to set the clock is through the Sony firmware, but I had to reset again to get back to the option to choose my firmware thus resetting the clock, ...).

I did. It has some issues on PRS-505 draining the battery too fast, so you have to be very careful.

My wife's PRS-505 hung up even though the Sony's firmware was active.

The rest of the features function as declared, more or less.

Wait, so this ebookapplications firmware will let you read ePubs with full justification? Mobi books with all their formatting intact?

Stuff like that is a pretty huge step forward for a custom Sony firmware.

Yes, it does have support on DjVu, ePub, Fb2 and many other formats. On PRS-505 it still has accelerated battery draining problem, watch out for this. On PRS–300 battery is fine.

Dictionary support is coming next

What about CBZ files, which are "multifile ZIP" files full of JPEGs/PNGs/GIFs? What about CBR, which are RAR of the same? Current support? Future?

Same here. Though I did think I'd seen it somewhere before ... but that could have been down to the fact that I initially read it as 'deja vu'...

I personally hate DJVU files, but sometimes pirates can't be choosers.:

It does allow epubs with full justification. Not sure about mobi since I didn't try any. The only format I tied was PDF, which sucked as much as PDF always sucks.

I've removed the firmware again because it's still not fully baked (it broke Calibre! I kept getting errors about a "corrupt database" even when in the Sony firmware, yet once the ebookapplications firmware was removed everything was fine again). It has promise, and if releases keep coming it may eventually be worth switching. For now, I see no reason to use it unless you absolutely have to use features it provides and can't get by with converting books to epub or LRF using Calibre.
