Definitely Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow. It has great narrative style and excellent characterization of someone who has gone from prosecutor to defendant and who will do whatever it takes to get a not-guilty verdict. It also gives a very detailed look at the judicial system and infidelity, and it has an intriguing plot. In short, it is an amazing novel that works as both Literature and Entertainment. Unfortunately, nothing else I've read by Turow has even come close to the brilliance of Presumed Innocent.
I'm secretly suspicious that Innocent is just an attempt by an author whose sales are declining to recapture some of his former glory. |

I know, I know ... not thrillers, but they are legal-ish ... anything from Erle Stanley Gardner in the Perry Mason series. The early ones from the 1930s are remarkable in how the lawyer behaves in quite unlawerly ways.

I'd have to stick with To Kill A Mockingbird. Great book. Great movie.

Richard Adin's Supreme Court post made me smile.
My one-and-only Supreme Court case, defending a newspaper in an invasion of privacy case, came long before Justices Thomas, Scalia, and Roberts were on the Court. We won. Paul Levine |

Long time since I read it, but The Seven Minutes by Irving Wallace seemed pretty good at the time . . .

How about Leon Uris's "Q.B. VII?"
The reference to Irving Wallace's "The Seven Minutes" brings to mind another legal thriller from the same era.
That's Leon Uris's "QB VII," about a libel trial. Fascinating book based loosely on his own experience of having been sued after writing "Exodus" by a German doctor he accused of atrocities at a concentration camp. Paul Levine |

Who could disagree with "Rumpole." I like a few laughs with my thrills. A little liquor, too.

Whoa, What About Female Writers?
I have been remiss in overlooking female writers and their strong Lady Lawyers.
One of my favorites is Lisa Scottoline. Going back to the mid 1990's for "Final Appeal," "Legal Tender" and "Mistaken Identity," through the current novels, "Look Again" and "Save Me," Lisa knows her way through both the legal plot and the traditional thriller. She's very very good at character and exploring real, deep emotions. Add her to my list. Paul Levine |

Resurrecting an old thread because I dug up an old anthology of legal short stories called "Legal Briefs" with authors like Grisham, Patterson, Scottoline etc. I haven't read all of the stories since I grew tired of the legal thriller around the time I bought this book.
Anyway, I've been watching "Suits" and working my way through "Damages" and was wondering if there's a book or even a TV series/movie that concentrated more on corporate law. I'm gonna read all the stories in my anthology to see if any of the writers grab me but I'd love some recommendations from actual legal thriller fans. |
