Looks like it's Amazon only for sure....it was supposed to be out today, but no Barnes and Noble release....what a joke.

Set yourself a meeting in your calendar for the day the book is released. Then just go buy it at that time. There is no "running out of stock" for ebooks...ergo, no advantage to preordering them.

Sure, if someone had a "free promo", get that as soon as you can. But for ebooks, the pricing can be highest on day one and drop relatively soon thereafter. I found that out the hard way when I pre-ordered the latest Tom Clancy at $14.99 only to see it drop to $12.99 a couple weeks later.

Now I don't prebuy books at all. I put desired books in my "to be read" list (a doc I keep on google docs) -- and when I'm ready to read the book, then I buy it.

Amazon sells you the book at the least expensive price point when you pre order. I know people who will cancel the pre-order and then pre-order the book at the lower price.

That's not necessarily true when the publishers set the price. I preordered the latest Tom Clancy ebook and paid the highest price. I would have anyway as I wanted to read it right away, and don't mind the $2 premium I paid for not waiting a couple weeks.

Still, I've now learned that "pre-Ordered" does NOT mean "best price". Same thing happened with a Harry Potter book. I preordered for around $20 only to find out it was available everywhere in huge quantities for $17 on opening day.

Pre-Order Price Guarantee

Amazon.com's price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and shipped. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, video game, or software item, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place your order and the release date. The order summary in Your Account will reflect the lowest price within 24 hours of the price change.

Our Pre-Order Price Guarantee applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, and not to items (or prices) offered by other sellers on our site.

If your order enters the shipping process before the release date and the price is lowered on the release date, we will automatically refund your credit card for the difference between the price you were charged and the release-date price. If you didn't use a credit card to pay for your order, please contact customer service through the Contact Us button on the right side of any Help page.

@quentness: The price dropped quickly AFTER it was offered for sale. It came out at $14.99, but then QUICKLY dropped to $12.99

So, in the future, I buy a book -- not when it comes out -- but when I'm ready to actually read it. So no preOrdering for me. Though I should include "no buying it the day it comes out either, unless I'm ready to read it".
