Purchased a Sandisk Ultra SDHC 8gb card to try out. Trying to add to device through calibre still fails and disconnects the drives from the computer. However, adding the books directly to the card via a card reader then putting the card in the kobo seems to work.

Still waiting to hear back from Kobo on this one. Was escalated to their tier-2 support for this issue several days ago and haven't received a response yet. If my inability to leave the card in the kobo and copy books to it in Calibre is just a limit of the hardware, that's fine and understandable. But it would still be nice to know if my device is just defective.

It's not a limitation of the hardware. I have an 8 GB in one of my Kobos. Your particular Kobo could have a broken/malfunctioning card slot.

Did you try the fix for a corrupted sqlite also suggested?

My sd card experience

I bought the cheapest 2gig card I could find.

over the last few days of playing with the sd card here are my observations.
1.) format the card as FAT32
2.) if you use a card reader attached to your computer and the save to disk function in Calibre it save the epub file the jpeg file and another file
3.) if you put the card in your kobo and use the send to device option the books show up only as the epub file (the cover art is still there) it takes much longer to transfer while the card is in the kobo.
4.) once the books are on the sd card everytime you power up the kobo it will spend several seconds powering up (as usual) and then it will process the new content (even if you havnt added to the sd card)
5.) the processing new content on power up seems faster if you transfer to the sd card using the send to device option than if you use the send to disk option.

I originally had a bunch of trouble getting the books on the card and tried all the formatting options and FAT32 is the only one that worked well. FAT 16 worked but some books wouldnt transfere onto the card no matter what I tried. NTSF works to get the books on but the card kobo didnt see the books.

I don't get it ... I just went to walmart, picked up a Kobo, and a 4gb sdhc card (whichever was cheapest - it's red?) and plugged it into my pc.
Calibre saw it and the card immediately - press button, insert literature. I didn't even format the card. i just right click the book, and send to card A.

now, granted, i am in a highly technical field, and i'm used to dealing with end users that range from "know just enough to be dangerous" to "terrified of computers in general" ... and i may be a bit jaded.

The fact that the past three posters have had no issue with 2GB+ cards, even using the "send-to-device" function in calibre leads me to believe that I do indeed have a malfunctioning device.

Hopefully I'll hear from Kobo support soon. In the meantime I may see if the Borders in my area (which is going out of business ) will replace it for me.
