Actually, multiple studies demonstrate that the best font for long periods of reading are serif fonts. Sans serif fonts tend to become difficult when reading for extended time periods.

Your question is aimed at the 500/505/300/600/900 models. Sony did do a firmware update for the the 505 (and I believe the 500) when it switched from its proprietary BBeB format to the ePub format. Otherwise, as far as I know, no other firmware updates for those models were done.

As another poster noted, Sony recently had a firmware update for the 950, within a couple of months of the device's release. The question remains open whether there will be subsequent firmware updates.

Having said that, I can't be more pleased than I am with my 950, even if there are no further firmware updates. The device is simply wonderful.

Yes, updates are very few and far between in previous models. I wouldn't have high expectations that they will do a firmware update on the newest models to provide better font options. You can, however, copy your own fonts onto the Sony ereaders and for non-DRM books use calibre or Sigil to customize the book to your preferences for font size, line spacing and font type. I've been using a font called Lexia DaMa which is very similar to the Caecilia font on the Kindle.

Even discontinued Sony Readers perfectly support "Unicode".
But I guess you mean particular alphabets included in default fonts.

A text size between "S" and "M"

and a way of not having the Sony Reader software open every time you plug the reader into the PC, would be great
