I have been using Macs for years and have never used the red x to "close to dock".
The red x actually closes the window. The only reason you can bring the window back is because the application you are using re-initializes a new window when you click on it in the dock. You can see in Mail if you do this it gets the mail each time you do because you have re-initialized a new window. Try it in OpenOffice and you are presented with the "New File" dialog each time you do it. If you click on the red x in the Finder you will see it closes the window and it doesn't come back when you click the finder in the dock. Some programs cannot stay running without the main window open and will then quit when you click the red x. Calibre is one of these. Screen sharing does the same thing. If you just want to hide the program from view just use command-h or better yet learn to use "Spaces" to create multiple work spaces and never have to hide or close windows. I program the center button on my mouse to activate spaces and have 9 work spaces to choose from. No more window clutter. Happy Sunday Archon |
