How many presses does it take to scroll through one whole page?

About three, I think, in 125% & landscape format. Maybe four, if you count jumping to the next page.

After reading these posts, I get the feeling that there is no practical solution to increasing font size on either epub or pdf books obtained via ADE with DRM attached. One of the reasons I bought the Kobo was that my local library listed it as a suitable device for reading their books. Unfortunately it appears not to be so. Of course it works quite well for books bought from Kobo - which is their main objective - and also for books from Gutenberg.
Do other machine (i.e. Nook, Kindle) suffer from the same crippling limitations?

I've read many ADE ePubs with no problem (font size button works as normal). I think that the very first software release on the Kobo had font size problems but that was fixed at least by July 2010 - do you have the latest software?

PDFs are problematic, if they were produced for a letter-size (8 1/2 X 11) page. I don't think any ereader has a solution for all PDFs. I avoid them. I can read a couple of pages (set to landscape, increase to 125%) but there's a lot of panning and clicking and too frustrating to read a novel that way.

The problem only seems to arise with books borrowed from a library. The UP button that should increase font size just takes you back a page. I have also read books happily via ADE but these came from Gutenberg. A full book page is presented on the Kobo screen and this requires a magnifying glass to read!

Liker dmacmart, I have not had much of a problem with library ADE epubs but something like 50/50 with ADE PDFs. I specifically avoid the library books that are PDF only unless I really need to get it - I often just do the Advanced Search for all books that are available and epub format only - then scroll through the results to pick a book that looks interesting. I do not think this is specifically limited to the Kobo. The PDFs are fine to read on the laptop but do not scale nicely for the small Kobo screen. It is possible to convert the PDFs to ePubs but it means stripping the DRM.

I use library books, and have not noticed any trouble with the font size button. As an alternative, have you tried the Display button on the side and select the front from the menu?

(I have original Kobo with s/w version 1.8.1)

I'm using version 1.7.4 and hve been trying to upgrade - so far unsuccessfully.
I have tried the Display button but that just zooms in to part of a page and reading it is not practical. Maybe it's my library that's doing something different.

There are no upgrades right now for the WiFi unit. 1.7.4 IS the current firmware level.

Are you talking about pdf's or ePub's here? Because for me, library ePubs work perfectly well to upsize and downsize, just as well as the bought-from-kobo books. On pdf's, there is no upsize button, only a back-and-forth button; it has nothing to do with library or not.

So far. I've tried one of each - with the same result. However I will try another book in epub format just to be sure.

Eureka! I downloaded another book and this one works as it should. Irealize that pdf's have problems but I've tried to stay with epub's. Not sure what I did wrong on the first one though.

My library (through Overdrive) offers both PDFs and EPUBs of many books. I learned the hard way to stay away from PDFs, and have never had a problem using EPUBs (or downloading them to the device through ADE).

I think it's already been suggested here, but I too ran into this problem last night. The library offered a book I wanted, but in audio or pdf only. I downloaded the pdf. By flipping the book into landscape mode and setting it to 100% I'm able to fit the width of the page on the screen with a reasonable font size. The height if the page doesn't fit, but I just read the the end of a paragraph near the bottom, then then flip the page up 1 or 2 clicks and continue reading. Not ideal but it works. I made it throught he first chapter that way last night (until I became too sleepy to continue...)

It's okay for a borrowed book. If I'd bought the book it would be unacceptable.
