I would go with a Kindle DXG or a Sony 950. My Mom is 69 and loves her DXG. Heck, I am 39 and I love my DXG. I got my Mom her DXG because I know that she would be using a larger font and that she would enjoy having a larger reading space.

Explain to her that she doesn't need to deal with the K3 keyboard at all -- pretend it isn't there.

isn't Kobo the reader connected to Borders? I would hesitate getting involved with a reader that is in a very shaky financial status and may have an unsupported platform here shortly

It is connected to Chapters in Canada. I know that Borders has only 10%-20% ownership.

The kindle is useable staight out of the box, no set up beyond plugging it in to charge. It is very intuitive in fuction and impossible to mess up. The letter keys can be completely ignored. I tried the Nook in a store and I couldn't figure out how to change the font size. The kindle is easier to use.

I bought a Kobo early last year, but didn't like it at all, and since Borders seems so unsteady I would also stay away from it.

I take it the keys are there for taking notes on a book, and web browsing/book ordering?

Yup. The keyboard is for notes and browsing the store and web.

At one point Borders owned 20% of Kobo. That was when the company raised $16 Million for start-up. They have had a second round of funding, and who knows how much of Kobo Borders US currently owns. I'm not at all sure that Borders going bust could or would affect the platform at all. The majority owner, Chapters-Indigo, in Canada, is making good money and is counting on Kobo as its eBook strategy.

Kobo is selling books in 130 countries, and the US,while an important market, does not actually "need" a presence at Borders stores to succeed there. It is sold through Walmart, and as it is now at Best Buy in Canada, I would not be surprised to see it sold at Best Buy in the US. It can also be purchased on-line, of course.

Kobo's main ebook format is ePUB, so anywhere you can buy or obtain an ePUB format ebook the Kobo will allow you to read it.

As far as her using one, that is what actually sparked this idea in my head. I overheard her asking to borrow my sister's PRS-600 (which I think would be better for her than a new 650/350, I love the new interface, but the old one just seems simplier/bigger.)

The only problem with the kindle is the full keyboard on the device, I think that might intimidate her.
I have a Kindle and a few Sonys. Sometimes I'll bring one of them to work and what I have noticed is that when someone plays with touchscreen Sony's, they don't need any help. When someone plays w/ the Kindle, I always get asked, "How do you....?" or "Where is the....?" The simplicity of the touchscreen is that you just touch where you are already looking, which makes navigation that much easier.

As for the 600, I wouldn't recommend it. She's older and her eye sight might not be the greatest, so the clearer the screen the better. Of all the readers I've had, the 650 sits at the top.

Thanks for the responses, but after dropping a few hints, she vehemently refuses. It was worth a shot, now I have to come up with something else.
