can anyone confirm the list of changes they made?

and why do they keep DXG on the same update pipe as the K2? what on earth is the unique hardware difference with the K3 that they give it preferential software updates?

I had the jailbreak and fonts hack on 2.5.2, then updated to 2.5.4 in october and just have updated to 2.5.7 without removing the hack/jailbreak. Nothing new but everything works fine, including the font hack (i read cyrillic books).

I think K2/DX hardware just is not compatible with all 3.0.x features. Half the RAM. Slower CPU. Maybe other CPU revision (this is not a problem, it mess only the binaries, not the source code I think). But the RAM issues is not a small thing to escape...

i never knew the K3 has double the ram, that would explain allot, at least it may explain why they can't implement the newer browser.

so does the DX-Graphite also have less ram and slower cpu?

The DXG CPU is the same as the K3's, a 532MHz ARM. The K3 does have twice the RAM, though: 256M vs. 128M (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix).

So that might well be an issue for the PDF reader functionality.

thanks for find this information...very useful.

half the ram could definately rule out an upgrade to the webkit browser but i don't see how that stops them offering darker text on PDFs and annotations.

Duokan manages all this and more on my DXG - it's also quicker at rendering.

Too little too late.
I am disappointed.

If the 3.0 enhancements are not possible on the DXG platform then the decent thing is to let the owners and potential buyers know.
Is that so hard to do?
Otherwise I think got the message: minimal support for a current product.

My DX will be fed with liberated EPUBS, freebies and PDF's from now on until Amazon makes it right

Somewhere in the other blogs I have read that someone was able to port whole K3 firmware to the K2 - the result was unstalbe and slow work of the browser and crashes. I think it is still possible to do some significant re-engineering and refresh of the K2 original firmware but Amazon of course is not interested of this and the result will be somewhat unstable and slow realisation. Add the fact that the K2 is not in production yet so it is not in competition yet with the other e-readers (K3 is not counting).

By the way - the K2 is still a good e-reader and I will use it while it works fine (or on release of the color Kindle with mirasol/Triton e-ink-like 6-7-inch screen and AppStore feature, or maybe when 9.7/10-inch e-Inks drops their price to under 200$ level). I.e. when the slim, cheap and reliable DX-like e-readers hit the market. I cannot see any reason to sell my K2 and to get a K3 because for reading e-books they are equal (Pearl screen is better but nothing revolutionary - same screen size, same types of e-books supported, same problems with PDFs, same lack of the Adobe/Library DRM support). Of course if someone gives me a K3 as a gift...

Update: CPU speeds are same in K2 and K3, but it looks like they are different cores.

regarding the firmware upgrades for DX-Graphite, the fact it has half the RAM of the K3 explains why it's on the older K2 update path. the new K3 os will be coded to address this extra memory and converting the code back to DXG would not be trivial. my prediction now is we will never see these updates on the DXG (or the other K2s for that matter).

kind of silly amazon furnished their most expensive Kindle (released only weeks before) with half the RAM of the smaller K3!!

i think at best amazon have mislead customers....if you read their marketing you will see no mention of less RAM and they continue to promote DXG as the 'premier' kindle despite it's hardware and software deficiencies.

Heck, I have been known to read on my K1 from time to time (at the beach) and it still works fine. The older models are still great readers. I am very happy with my DXG. I don't read PDF's so it is not that important to me but it woud be nice to have just in case.

If my PC needed more RAM I'd buy some. Can that be done for the DXG?

Big difference in update files sizes: K2 21Mbs and the DXG 3.3Mbs.

I had an order in for a second DXG (current delivery estimate to Australia is 6 - 8 weeks) but I cancelled. When I bought my first DXG last month I did think I was getting a true 3rd generation device.

Anyway, I think the DXG is way over-priced in comparison to the K3.

Seriously doubt the PDF reader needs that much ram, besides the duokan PDF reader works great on 2.x devices and has tons of features, and they all have 128 mb ram. They (Amazon) just doesn't want to write/port the code. As far as the browser goes, I could care less. I bought my DX for larger viewing of books and PDFs.

Doesn't mean anything. The mechanism that Amazon use to do the updates just changed from complete firmware images to patches which get applied to the existing firmware.

I wouldn't say it can't be done. I would say it can't be done easily. People have been adding memory to ungradable machines for decades. The simplest way is to piggyback onto the existing chips. Maybe worth the effort if it's a $2000 machine. For something worth $200, cheaper/easier to buy the newer better model.
