Ahhh... That's probably it.

Since the original is a bitmap, the scaling is done at that level. Basically, 4 pixels are merged into 1. But if the graphic is vectors, scaling would be much more intelligent - making for a much sharper image when scaled (up or down in this case).

How long does rasterfarian take to process a single picture?

what raterfarian does is actually using ghostscript to vectorize PDF-images and then process it with netbpm to create png. In the end it will still be a bitmapped image, but with a much higher contrast and sharpness and in the correct resolution for the device. So teh device don't need to resize anything anymore and thus show the best quality image.

The cbz viewer in the booster pack uses a pretty decent Java based scaler and dither routine that has supplied pretty good results for me.

I mainly used the Spiderman "King Pin" series for Comic testing but I've since been using it for lots of photo slide shows, power points etc... the 768x963 16 levels of grey resolution does help over the Sony Reader.

Hmm... i don't know. I still find the use of grayscale is really taking a lot away from the fun, since comics rely so much on coloring..

As I've written here: http://hightech.afmag.net/reading-ma...ve-review.html a comic that is being grayscaled looks like everything happens in the dark, as if you're reading a "movie noir". Kinda depressing.

I just want to say thanks for the recommendations/input and that I haven't completely disappeared

As it stands, I still haven't been able to view neither comic nor manga on my reader and I've tried each program (I think) throughout the forums here. With the manga2ebooks I get an error and with rasterfarian it doesn't give me the option to convert to the iliad (only allows sony reader). I've made a pdf file through html for the first time but the print turned out too small to read with any comfort.

I'll be attempting it again later today since I haven't fiddled with trying to convert the comics in the last two weeks or so. Hopefully I'll figure something out. If not, I'll post concrete details on what I'm doing and the errors I may come across.

There is no .exe. It is a java program so you need to run the JE-Comics.jar. Assuming you have Java installed on your computer just double click it and it should run.

Hey Splat,

Awhile back I noticed the same thing about the .jar file. I have java version 1.6 (I assume the program we're talking about is from java.com, right?) but when I try to double click the .jar file, winzip or winace pops up and I get completely stuck at that point.

I'm messing with the various programs again today, seeing if I can get something set up before a flight tonight.

I meant to post the specific problems and really have no excuse for not doing so apart from putting it on the backburner due to work. But I think I have figured something out and will know for sure when I get spend more time on it when I return. In any case, not a complete failure-- I managed a few volumes of a manga simply through pdfs (the print is large enough unlike the other comic I had tried to do up) and transfered it over. Again, thanks for the help everyone

Sounds like what happened is when you installed WinAce it took over the file extension for Java JAR's. It's a common compression scheme listed in several of these all-in-one archiving programs (WinRAR will do it too if you're not careful). All you need to do to fix this is right-click on the file you're trying to run with the .jar extension, select "Open With," "Choose Program," find "Java 2 Platform ... binary" in the list (or whatever version of java you have installed, and place a check in the box next to "Always open with ..." Provided you're using Windows (2000/XP/MCE, not sure about Vista (PoJ)) That should, this will work for you. One thing you'll have to be on the watch for is that the offending program(s) may try to highjack the extension again at a later date, if so simply right-click on the file, select "Open With" and Java will be one of the default programs you can choose without having to find it again.

You can also simply try re-installing Java and see if it re-takes its extension back again. Have fun!

I tried the above (even re-installed) but the same problem keeps reoccurring; when I try to open the program with java a black screen pops up and disappears within a second. There's words within it but it disappearS too quickly to read... I did however managed to take a video of it and freeze frame to be able to see what exactly was written: "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoclassDefFoundError: C:\DOCUME" 1\Danie\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 21 for JE-Comics-v0/7/1/zip\JE-Comics/jar"

This is jibberish to me; I have no idea what it means

What java tells you is that it cannot launch program since cannot load/find some of the classes needed by it. This could happen because of your java libraries version or the version to which the JE-Comics was compiled to (but I'm sure this is not the case).

Since I'm not an JE-Comics expert, I'm not sure what you need to run it, but I suggest you to try launch it from console with a command like "java -jar je-comics.jar".

Welcome to the wonderfull world of java! (Don't hesitate it, java rules, but sometimes can do a bad trick with us!)
