If you want to hack it, go to the Pandigital forums on slatedroid. Start with the wiki and hack it by following the instructions you find there. I'm currently trying to help someone get the Cruz software off his, and he's not the only one to have problems with this. Most people just don't like it, but for some PDNs, it really is almost the kiss of death.
I like the button hack because when you use fullscreen apps like Aldiko, every time you touch the screen the soft buttons pop up. If you are trying to read, every time you touch the screen to turn the page, the soft buttons pop up, and you have to wait for them to disappear because they block out the first few lines of text. It was really annoying me, so I did the button hack.

I like the modified Cruz UI firmware but am not crazy about the inability to use the SD card. I've settled on mac1_131's firmware.

Yeah, that's actually why I stopped using aldiko. I use Moon+ Reader, which if I don't set it to fullscreen keeps the soft buttons/menu bar visible at all times. That way, I can get to the controls faster. I can sacrifice a line of text on the screen for that.

To each his own.

I don't understand what you mean by not being able to use the SD card. Mine works fine.

I know a lot of people love aldiko. I had 2 problems with it. 1) I read a lot in bed, and I don't hold it in such a way that hitting the volume buttons is easy for me. So I tapped the screen, but that kept bringing up the notification bar and that covered the top line of text. 2) I have something like 42 books in my reader right now. (And that's actually low for me.) I read a lot of series books, so I want to be able to find the next book in the series when I'm done with the previous one. The bookshelf that aldiko defaults to defeats me every time. I need to be able to sort by author, but that's a few extra clicks--every single time I go back to the bookshelf.

Moon+ has 3 tabs at the top of the page when you go back to the menu. Local files, Net library, and My Shelf. In My Shelf, there's a shelf at the top with books I'm currently reading and then a clickable menu below that with options: All Books, My Downloads, My Favorites, By Authors, By Tags.

That setup is just more convenient for me with all the extra books, authors, and series that I read. I don't have to go scrolling through shelf after shelf of books on a bookshelf. I don't have to click through a series of menus to get to sort by author or tag. It's just all available to me with one click into the bookshelf.

I think Moon+ is a lot more configurable than aldiko, and it's configurable in ways that work for me, personally. I have nothing against people using aldiko, but I do like to encourage people to try Moon+.

Besides, it scrolls, so now I can lie in bed and not even have to touch the screen for whole chapters while it scrolls quietly ahead of me as I read. It takes lazy reading to whole new levels.

Just got back from Kohls near my house....they had one Pandigital 7"......picked it up, with a 20% discount card that the wife had.........less than $50 appears to be a pretty good deal....
Told the wife about the deal.....this will be hers.....
Haven't done much, just set it up......

First impressions.....(I'm definitely spoiled)
the screen quality is nowhere near my NookColor
the touchscreen isn't as good as the NC
Lots of glare compared to the NC
The wireless works well

That's all I can comment on, after 5 minutes.....

Can it be rooted to access the market?

And you can buy 5 of these at Kohl's for the same price as one NC. 8 of them for the price of one NC at BBB.

At this point, without having actually used it much......I'm not doubting it's a great deal.....just pointing out my initial perceptions (after just a few minutes of use).....

Thank you very much for the tip.....I would have never known of this deal without it.....
