Excellent, thanks. I found a YouTube lookalike, which works fine, because I'm too chicken to root the IQ. To be honest, I'm not sure what rooting would really do or why it's helpful--not dissing, just asking.

I finally found Audible on Mediafire.com. WHEW!

Many reasons to root. One is to get android market working so that you don't have to run around trying to find alternate downloads for apps.

Cheers

Right, getting access to the Market one of the main reasons to root. That will give you the ability to install the official Google Gmail and Calendar apps, which would be super helpful if you're a heavy Google user.

Well, for the Pandigital Novel there is a package out there called 'gapps.apk'. That was an installer that included several Google apps. However, I don't know of an equivalent for the IQ. I assume you should be able to get the apps from the Market. I'm not 100% sure, since I have not rooted my IQ and accessed the Market.

Well, I AM a Google user, but I'll confess I don't know much about rooting. Other than images of pigs digging for truffles . . . what is it and what does rooting accomplish?

Is there any real reason to root the IQ since we can get apps with the SlideMe (SAM 4.0) application with current firmware?

Some apps only are available on the Google market.
Rooting allows installing the Google proprietary apps that are not licensed for tablet use.
Rooting allows control of the Linux OS underlying the Android environment enabling some apps (system backup, for example) to be installed and run and others to be removed.
It is the difference between running as a User and running as Administrator on other OSes.

Rooting allows you to install app2sd, which in turn gives you the possibility to have your apps saved on your SD card, thus gaining a huge amount of space for many more apps. In the original unrooted version the PB FW has a very limited space allocated to apps.

Okay, well, that makes sense to me. This morning, I was trying to figure out how to do just that and then realized that moving the apps to my SD card wasn't even an option.

So . . . okay . . . how do you do this and not make your IQ blow up?

You read this thread:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=113048

in particular, Coredump-EE's posts toward the end.

If you are going to do both the a2sd to get more space and android market hack, you MUST to the Android market FIRST before doing the a2sd. Otherwise, you are going to have to pry the back cover off and pull the power plug to reflash.

cheers

What he says . But don't even think of going there if you are not comfy with commands, since for the time being the whole process is a manual one. I am sure one of our guys here will end up writing a prog that does it all, right now as I said it is not really for beginners. But if you are using Linux, then go for it, you'll be fine. I used Linux years ago so kind of remembered some stuff, but still got blocked one or two times and needed virtual help. And without being full of myself, I am not bad with computers and electronics and never scared of risking a brick.

Bricks are good paperweights, too.

There is supposed to be an update coming that will bring the IQ up to Android 2.0 which is supposed to allow installing apps to the SD card.
