The brand new Kindle 3's that my family received as gifts (different orders, different shipments, one ordered on 12-22-10) all had 3.0.2, not 3.0.3.
3.0.2 never actually went into official release at least via the website. 3.0.1 had some really severe bugs like causing Kindles to be extremely temperature sensitive so they couldn't use that for shipping Kindles. 3.0.2 has some weird browser bugs and some people reported lots of crashing as well so they eventually made 3.0.3 which is still in preview stage.

After I installed the 3.0.3 update on my previous Kindle; the browser got better, more stable. That's why I updated to 3.0.3 when I got my replacement and my new Kindle.
I've got no problem now at all with both; that is....I've monitored the indexing like a hawk when downloading my books. If it indicated, after a few hours, there were some books still indexing.....woosh...deleted them-reformatted and tried again, or phoned Amazon.

I'm convinced that most of the problems I had with the Kindle, were connected with downloading and indexing a lot of books, and not wether I had downloaded the latest update or not.

That is typically why it is better to only do 10-15 at a time, not large numbers all it once, regardless of which firmware version you are using (although it has gotten MUCH better with 3.0.3).

Trough trial and error (one replaced Kindle) I can say that, if closely monitored, downloading 100-150 books at a time is all right. But always check if there're still books indexing, before the next.

I've got the Screensaver Hack installed. Will I need to remove that before the Kindle will update its firmware?
