Have you tried to read A4 PDF docs on the Kindle? Given its total lack of PDF reflow, it's not really practical to do so. This is an area that the iPad excels in.

My only problem with the current Ipad as an ereader is that it's current display is not entirely comfortable to my eye and it is a bit heavy. (currently it's a bit like using Swiss army knife to cut my food). As far as a PDF reader, Kindle doesn't even register - everything is a kludge PDF wise and the Ipad offers the portrait option to display PDF's unlike laptops.

A lighter Ipad 2 with retina display (as speculated at various sites) would offer a great ereader experience. I do prefer the retina display to e-ink.

I do wish Apple comes out with a 7" Ipad 2 or 3 - I don't believe Steve Jobs when he says a 7" touch display won't work because of finger size. I've tried a Samsung Galaxy Tab and it's the perfect "hand" size, though I don't think it's ready for prime time.

Agreed about Stanza OP. I use it on my iphone and it's an excellent little reading app - very customisable and I love the fact that you can dim the screen while reading by sliding your finger from top to bottom of the screen.

Doesn't work with mobi files but it works with epubs so I convert drm-free mobi files to epub in Calibre and store in dropbox. It's then an easy matter to visit dropbox using th iphone/ipad (either via the internet browser or the dropbox app) and you get an option to open up the book in Stanza to read.

Most of my reading is done on the Kindle but I also read a fair amount on the iphone due to its portability and the fact that people don't often realise that you are in fact reading! IE it's a bit more discreet - perfect for those boring family gatherings etc!!! lol

People who go on and on about the weight of the iPad have clearly not used it. I've been sitting here for the last two hours reading Last of the Mohicans-- one handed, and I don't have fore arms like Popeye. No problem at all.

Neither. I read large-format, untagged PDFs (I presume that's what your question is referring to) on my 17" laptop, or my 5" jetBook, where ADE can often handle reflowing. This is choice second-best, though, since I prefer not to read large-format, un-tagged PDFs at all.

Same here. Letter sized documents are usually associated with productivity, not leisure reading, and are relegated to my laptop.

I really think it's more about the size of the bag rather than the weight of it, but I would say that it's quite stupid to read a format not adapted to your medium (well consider it like cursing at all flash website for ipad/iphone owner).
There is clearly some area where the ipad is vastly superior to the kindle, and others where the kindle is definitely the winner, but your choice, our choice is dependent on our priorities.
My priorities where to get a device to read e-book, smaller than my laptop (I think that the ipad is bigger than my laptop), with some optional development option for a linux laptop (and that is unfortunately for me where the Ipad currently fall short).
Of course I represent a very small niche, but our choice are hopefully dependent on our own needs, and not the needs of the others (on the other hand I'm recommending an ipad like device to my wife, does it connect properly to hotmail ?)

Size is important to me because of my situation, so it would be difficult for me to consider an iPad for reading purposes. Everywhere I would use an iPad (which would essentially be anywhere I had a flat surface to put my arms on while I read) I could use my laptop. While the iPad definitely has advantages over a laptop (it's lighter than my current laptop, for instance), the big advantage to me of a laptop is I already have one. It would be hard for me to justify (at this point in my life, anyway) buying another device when I have one that can serve the purpose.

Agreed. I love the idea of the iPad (I enjoy my iphone) but I already have a 10" netbook which is very portable and offers me a lot more in terms of what you can do with it. So, as much as I love gadgets, I can't see how having an iPad would be an improvement over what I already use.

However, if I were to win one, I woudn't say no

Now, if they brought out an iPad which was bigger than the iPhone but smaller than the current iPad - probably around 6-7" - I would be much more interested because it would a) be less expensive and b) be something I could easily take out and about in a bag/large pocket.

I recently complained to my wife that I felt that I had wasted money buying iPad. She completely disagreed. My wife and kids (5y.o. and 2y.o.) are constantly fighting for iPad. She says that we need to buy two more iPads so each one of them would have one. If she does that, I am selling her car.

I love the look of the iPad and would love to have one to play with if I could justify the price, but I broke my neck some years ago and am limited on what I can hold up. I do a lot of my reading in bed, but most hardbacks are just too heavy to hold up when I am in bed. I think the iPad would be comparable and therefore too much. The kindle OTOH is very light and easier to read than a dead tree book of any kind.

I've seen a kind of tri-angled cushion somewhere, filled with rice(?); where you can lean your iPad on/against.
I have my two Kindles for reading and love them for it.
But I also love my iPad for the PDF's, internet, games, making journals, take a quick look at the forum, view my foto's etc. Also I have the Kindle-apps on it with the Amazonbooks. And it always starts up in a second; fool-proof. We gave my 92-year old mother in law one and she was able to manage it very fast.

I think many people would find the discussion at least insightful whether an iPad is going to be a useful purchase for them over a MacBook or other laptop.

I have an Ipad and a Kindle DX. I read on my kindle DX. I play and browse on my ipad. I could never get my eyes used to reading continuously from the IPAD screen.

My sister has a kindle and I am going to buy one very soon, I was very impressed with the screen. The iPad is just an oversized ipod touch. The kindle is a e-reader and an e-reader only.

I find reading on LCD screens and even computer screens (Large amount of text) very tiring on my eyes.
