But I so interested in the matter, that I might try to dig up the appropriate temperature data and go check myself.

Have you read/seen anything about "global darkening"? I saw a documentary about it the other day, and it explained why we aren't "warming" that much despite CO2 emissions. Very interesting (and worrying!), because I wasn't fully convinced by Al Gore's movie (the temp. rise and CO2 rise didn't match).

The pools of melting ice on top of arctic and antactic ice are a fact though. And the fact that they are darker than surrounding ice compounds the melting even faster. The ice mass over water is drastically dwindling. This last winter has seen a disappearance of life on these surfaces. Seals that reproduce there have not produced a single pup and the polar bears that usually feed on them have been seen swimming aimlessly for hundreds of km until drowning.

Well, the whol earth is a pretty complex system. Actually we have to take solar activita into consideration as well. And we would have to take into consideration potential super volcanoes like Yellowstone or Taupo. But in any way I think it is a good idea to stop burning fossil fuel. We have better use for CH then burning it...

It really is high time for a general cut-down in fossil fuel useage.
One of the factors is global warming, the other is that the fossil-fuel supply is simply limited...and there won't be any resupply in the forseeable future...

Unfortunately there is very little there right now that could replace Oil and Gas right niw.
Hydrogen needs to be produced somehow (so you have the same problem, you just move it to another place) and things like wind and solar energy don't really produce a whole lot of energy in their current manifestations...

Maybe something like the "Orbo" technology created by Steorn might work, but since it's supposed to break the base laws of physics I'm not really buying it right now...
That leaves us with Nuclear Power which has its own and quite considerable drawbacks...

There is only one free energy. Solar. It's the only one that comes from elsewhere outside the planet. It's also the one nature uses the most.

Well, yvan, I agree with you... as long as you count fusion as a kind of solar.

Actually, BBC News had some interesting updates about fusion power in the last week or so. I know it's been "only ten years away" for about 50 years now, but things are looking a bit more promising.

That global dimming stuff is just adding another layer of complexity to the whole system, isn't it? Maybe they'll get the models right in another 50 years, but by then we'll be in pretty deep trouble (and out of oil, most likely). Though I have to say, even the current models are accurate enough to make me worried. When a trend line is that steep, it can be off by a few degrees and still present a pretty serious concern.

If any of you read german, i recommend Andreas Eschbach "Ausgebrannt". Interesting story, where fiction meets reality. And its all about oil

Yes, because now it turns out that if we cut down on air pollution (particles), as we are currently doing (we've cleaned up a lot in the past years on this apparently), it makes the CO2 emissions really get down to business... so instead of a temp. rise of 5º in 50 years, it would be 10º (or more)... that's really bad news.

I'd like hydrogen-fueled cars, once they make it workable, it looks like a very viable solution, and very clean, since the waste product is water.

The actual crop of Hydrogen cars barely make 100 miles on a tank and they complained electrics had only 150?

I didn't see/read that "extreme" limitation on Hydrogen cars... consulted with my husband (he's a documentary freak, lol), and he says "less than gas, yes, but less than electric, I don't recall that". But if you say so, I'll believe you.

I should have quoted this Hela. Sorry!

This comes from the documovie that was shown last year. It's called "Who killed the Electric car". You can find it at rental stores. There is a web site

I'm a solar electric fan.

I believe that an EV should be sold with a solar panel covered car port.

This is not really an Iliad thread anymore...perhaps someone should start a "Global Warming" thread in anotzher section of the forum?
This is a very interesting (and also vitally important) topic, so if you give it it's right name and place you'll probably even have a far larger group of people to discuss with...
