The Log of a Cowboy, Andy Adams. Fictional true-to-life account of a cattle drive.
The Oregon Trail, Francis Parkman. Classic literature, but exciting and readable.

I have to 3rd (4th? 5th?) Lonesome Dove. I've read a lot of books in my life, but it still hangs in there as my favorite novel. I've re-read it several times and listened to the audiobook several times. (The audiobook is a treat, by the way. It's read by the actor Lee Horsley, and he does a wonderful job.) My cats are named Augustus and Lorena.

I used to love reading JT Edson (Dusty Fog etc) when I was younger, but as I got older I realised how racist or biased the man actually was, a shame because the stories were pretty good!

I vote for Lonesome Dove. I just read that Dances With Wolves is on Kindle and Nook on another thread and I will vote for that as well after I download it (I've just read the paperback).

I feel the same way about Valdez and Hombre. I personally liked "Riders of the Purple Sage" and "Lonesome Dove" but I'm not a Western enthusiast. I just read them on occasion.

They have just released True Grit in conjunction with the new movie.
