The most noticeable thing about the following pic to me isn't his expression, eyes, or what-have-you. It's that he's touching the screen like that. As a new Kindle owner, I'm way too squeamish for that. I'm one step away from holding it like a vinyl LP. As far as the ereader vs. tablet thing, I can only say that in the short time I've had with my Kindle, nothing else compares to the E-Ink experience. If I think about reading any digital book, E-Ink is the image I'll be conjuring. |

That's how I was with my Kindle 1. The Kindle 3's screen takes up more of the overall surface area, so I didn't have much of a choice in changing my tune. At least, not until I got my Kindle cover for Christmas.

I think the real reason Bezos doesn't care about tablets vs eink readers is because his business is selling books. He'll sell you the reader, too (Amazon sells pretty much everything), but it's that steady stream of regular purchases (like books) that he's really interested in.
As long as you buy the book from him, he really doesn't care what you read it on. |

The iPad is lighter than most hardback books, and can display about the same amount of text on a page as the typical hardback does. I find it to be an excellent reader for use at home. When I'm out and about I have my Kindle with me, because it's much more convenient to carry.
Both are excellent devices. |

I do think it says something that folks with Nook Colors are rooting their devices and downloading the Kindle Android App. I thought that the ability to buy e-books from Sony, Kobo, and BN meant that you didn't need to buy books from a store like Amazon. (winks) It makes me chuckle. Last edited by ProfCrash; 12-29-2010 at 05:12 PM. |

Have a sony Reader and bought an iPad. I'm satisfied with both. I use the iPad fo reading technical PDFs, mail and web surfing while I leave the books om my prs 505. System works.

It probably depends on how much reading you do - I would imagine really dedicated readers prefer to read on e-ink because it's easier on the eyes. If you just want to read a magazine on the bus the IPad would be sufficient. A bit like MP3 players - I have 2 because I like audio books and am a musician, so need a player that has a lot of features. If I just wanted to listen to a few pop tunes I would use my phone's MP3 player. Not everyone has the same requirements from a piece of technology.

The thing I really like about my ereader is that reading is the only thing it does! If I had an iPad, I would easily get distracted and just check my email which would lead to checking something on a webpage, etc. With the ereader, I can immerse myself in a book for an hour or two and not get distracted by the shiny web.

I love my Kindle, but I would also love an iPad (or one of the forthcoming Android 3 slates) as well. I will probably get one this year for my wife.
I see the Kindle/eink devices as reading devices. They are truly book substitutes for me. The slate would be for web surfing, photos, videos, and more productivity oriented tasks (including PDFs/books with graphics). Although there is some overlap (especially if you have a DX) they are very much two different items. |

I have to agree with Bezos on this one...
I bought the Nook Color specifically for color reading. Stuff like magazines, non-fiction books, craft books and cook books. My fiction reading is still done on my Kindle. I am one of the folks who prefer e-ink for long reading and the LCD for short reading. I love both devices. I tried the iPad but found it too bulky and heavy for a color e-reader. The Nook Color won hands down! |
