Sorry for the hijack. Am I correct in thinking that with the latest Kindle it is not currently possible to remove DRM if the book is downloaded straight to the Kindle?
Not that I would ever fancy reading a book on my computer but it seems bizarre that if I download an ebook from Amazon it only works on one device and not all Kindle devices/apps registered to that account. |

It's down to the way that Mobipocket DRM works. Each device has a unique identifier, called a PID, and that's what's used as the encryption key for the book.

And to the second issue, taking a copy of the version that was downloaded directly to (or for it) kindle to a pc will not allow the k-4-pc to read that version. Now, what I'm personally not clear about, was the version of the first book I got for my Blackberry with its kindle-reader. It seemed to be a prc book and could be read on the kindle when I got the k3. Without decoding (stripping drm)??????? |

It was a free offer when I first downloaded the Kindle app for the BB. And it was the Lost Symbol. I would not expect that one to be free of drm but who knows. Actually, there was a slight complication - I had accidentally grabbed it using my non-standard email on the BB. When I got the k3, I realized the erroneous email and registered with the other email - that meant that Lost Symbol was "lost" to the new email-account and did not show up in the archive. But I was not aware of the drm stuff and so just copied it to the k3 and it was there. At least, that's how I recall things. The other books I grabbed seem to also be prc volumes.

If I download a book from Amazon to Kindle 4 mac....is it possible to free up so I can transfer to my K3? I am using Calibre and have the recent Applescript that was released by an apprentice somewhere.
Under Kindle content I just see a load of files with random file names. |

If you look on your Kindle you should see 'Archived Items' on the home page. Go into this and you will see your books that were bought before your got your K3. At least, that's where mine are. You can select the proper book and it will download it.
Or you can go into your Amazon account and go to 'manage your Kindle' and just push all your books from there. Since you have the book for Apple4Mac already there is no need to involve Calibre, unless you want to. And the book should still be on your computer, also, either way. If you already started reading your might need to sync, but I am unsure, since I just got my K3, as well. |

I am probably totally misunderstanding part of the question here, so let me apologize in advance if I am!
![]() I just want new Kindle owners to understand when they purchase a book through Amazon and have it sent to their own Kindle, DRM or not, it can be read on ALL Amazon devices registered to that account. You can go back into your "Manage your kindle" page and have it sent to your Kindle4pc, or you can have it sent to your Kindle for Android, or whatever -- those are the two I happen to have. Or if you don't want to do that, in any of your other Kindle applications you can just open the archive and choose to have the book downloaded to that device. Again, if you're talking about something else entirely I apologize, but I'm just afraid that new owners might believe if they initially have the book sent to their Kindle they won't be able to access it on their PC or their phone. Edit: I often download a book to my Kindle first and start reading it, then when I have the time I go back and open Kindle4PC and download it there. Then I add it to Calibre from My Kindle content folder, which works its magic because of the plugin. Yes, that leaves a DRM version on my kindle but I'm okay with that because I have the stripped one in calibre if I need it. Last edited by bjones6416; 12-27-2010 at 11:47 AM. |

I have Windows so not sure if it works the same way on a Mac. If you open K4mac and double click on the file that you want to add to Calibre it will put that file 1st. (accessed that day). Go into your 'my kindle content' folder and sort by date with the current date 1st. It will be at the top under the current date. Just import that .azw file into Calibre. If you are asking something different I'm sorry. Maybe you can explain further. Carol |

1) Yes I do backup my books. While I've never lost a book from Amazon, I've lost books by other vendors because the books went out of print and this can happen to Amazon too.
2) The best was to remove multiple bookmarks is to open the book, use the menu to enter into "My Clippings & Notes" (something like that). Then all of you bookmarks and notes will show up. Select the bookmark and hit delete. The other methods mentioned do work, but they are much more time consuming. =X= |
