Try to set the DNS server of your ISP to your /etc/resolve.conf

Hi chaley
Thanks for the input, but I clearly don't have a blocked connection or you wouldn't be seeing this. Everything works - except wget, it now seems. I have no software firewall running because the router does it - and no proxy set up. |

Hi butitsmyname
I am using Mint Linux Julia, that I believe is based on Ubuntu 10.10. This has been my distro of choice for quite a long time. Before that I was using FreeBSD (since 4.8) and PC-BSD. One of several reasons I choose Mint Linux is that it is basically Ubuntu with a little bit tweaked UI and some non-free packages installed by default. I like "start menu" at the lower left corner and other numerous tweaks. But the was majority of packages is identical. I have installed Julia quite recently and Calibre installation went without a hitch. In previous distribution I have installed Calibre from packages, just to make sure all dependencies are resolved before I install binary version from Calibre site. This time (when I installed Julia) I didn't do that. I went to http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux and copied and pasted command to the terminal window: Code:
sudo python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read(); main()" I have updated Calibre several times since than, always by running the above line. It asks for default install directory, I accept the default and wait for install to complete. Newer had problem with that. I will try to have a look at your error logs ... Stay tuned, I am pretty sure that together with this wonderful community we can help you. |

To my knowledge you haven't yet established whether calibre/wget thinks that they are to use a proxy. This could happen if there is a http_proxy line somewhere in your environment variable setup. The web browser can be told to ignore it (usually is), and email etc never use it, so the fact that they work is not a good test.

Do this in a terminal:
unset http_proxy And then in that same terminal try your various failing things. |

Oh, you're hard to please, chaley, but there is indeed no mention of a proxy in my environment either.
In late breaking news, I've just been trying Wget on different sites. It works fine for ftp and http downloads from most sites, but not all. When it works, it's immediate and as fast as my connection allows. OK, with a cup of tea and some jaffa cakes to hand I have now installed and run the 0.7.34 binary download. And it still doesn't download news and still gives the same traceback, ending with: URLError: <urlopen error [Errno 110] Connection timed out> I think I've used up enough of my life on this. I'll swallow my male pride, send back my stuffed Tux and use the version on my wife's PC. Oh the shame. Thanks for all your support - except chaley - who chose to speak in that oddly stilted yet grammatically perfect way people do who suspect that the person they are talking at doesn't quite know what is going on. Probably sporting pursed lips as well. |

Hi Kovid
Great program - it's seriously good on my wife's PC. I wouldn't have devoted my life to trying to get it working if I didn't *really* want to use it. I tried your suggestion (why does no one believe I have no proxy? Is it compulsory and no one told me?) but the result is no result, as usual. A tiny file full of failure instead of being packed con palabras sabios del periodicos españoles. pooh |

I am curious why you choose to be insulting?

Hi Chaley
Lo siento. Really, I'm sorry. I never meant to be insulting. my psychologist (I have a piece of paper from the government says I'm nuts) thinks its because I don't believe other people are real. On the net it's even harder to believe other people are real. That isn't an excuse, only an explanation. Hi Kovid output of locale LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8" LC_TIME="en_US.utf8" LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8" LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8" LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8" LC_NAME="en_US.utf8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL= Thanks for taking an interest. We're still with the binary 0.7.34 |

Because that's the only thing that could possibly explain your (networking) symptoms that I know of.

You have not got back about the resolve.conf - I remember I had some issues when I relied on my router's DNS settings (so resolve.conf was pointing to the router IP) but it was resolved after setting the DNS servers in resolve.conf directly. In case you have tried it already just ignore this comment...
