It does take time for them to load and before they load there are blank spaces already drawn for them. Maybe I need to to a reset and move the epubs over manually without the associated jpgs unless anyone else has another suggestion. As it is the gallery is useless and is a deal breaker for this unit if I can't get this to work.
... an update to my gallery issue is I had to delete all the books on the NC (I did it through Calibre). This got rid of the thumbnails in the gallery as well as all the empty spaces there. Then I copied the epubs directly into folders I made for the various collections. Now the thumbs don't show-up in the gallery. So just deleting the jpgs wasn't enough it appears.

I googled .nomedia so I understand what it does now. Is this advice applicable to a non-rooted NC or just a rooted NC?

I would expect it to work on a non-rooted NC, but I haven't tried it. I don't know for a fact that the built-in Gallery will check for the .nomedia file when it scans the folders, however, as I don't have my NC yet. The Gallery on my Android phone does honor .nomedia files.

The more I think about it, I suppose you'd have to be rooted to install that apk.
You can, as long as your NC is rooted. It's available on the web, it's called Gallery3DFroyo.apk.
