The biggest problem I have with onions is remembering that the dog doesn't get any of what I added them to.

When the cat smells the onions you are cutting up, he thinks you are making a beef stew and that his share of the meat is coming his way. He wah wahs and rubs on your legs and stands up. You really have problems if you are cutting up onions for some other reason because he can't understand why the beef is not forthcoming.

For beef stew I use whole small onions sometimes I half or quarter larger onions. Since the cooking time is so long the flavor diffuses evenly. It's painless and I can easily separate out the onions when the dog wants a treat.
