I have always heard that chewing gum stops the eyes from watering when cutting up onions. Today I am going to use that often heard but never tried advice.

Cut onions release a chemical irritant (an enzyme, I think) into the air and irritates the eyes, so you cry.

I've never tried the goggles, but if the irritant can't reach the eye, the eyes shouldn't tear, right?

Humm, I wonder if swim goggles would work, also?

Mornin' all.

I have found an absolute fool-proof way of cutting onions and not getting all teary.

I get my husband to do it - and No! my hubby is not going to come to your place to cut onions.

The biggest problem I have with onions is remembering that the dog doesn't get any of what I added them to.

When the cat smells the onions you are cutting up, he thinks you are making a beef stew and that his share of the meat is coming his way. He wah wahs and rubs on your legs and stands up. You really have problems if you are cutting up onions for some other reason because he can't understand why the beef is not forthcoming.

Beef stew is what I was cutting them up for. You have powers.

For beef stew I use whole small onions sometimes I half or quarter larger onions. Since the cooking time is so long the flavor diffuses evenly. It's painless and I can easily separate out the onions when the dog wants a treat.
