Kindle wifi sold out

Looks like White 3G is back ordered about a week now.

Seems like Amazon fell just a little short of Prime inventory management this year - they fell short about a week on the WiFis and of course they had to shutdown International delivery until after the Holiday.

Much better than being sold out in early November though.

The problem is that Sony & Amazon are the only ones using the Pearl screens and I think there just are not enough Pearl screens to meet the demand for Sony & Amazon.

I'm hoping that eink will soon stop making the older Vizplex screens and go to Pearl only.

I believe that I read somewhere that Vizplex is contracted to make the Pearl Screen specifically for the Kindle and Sony's. I don't know how long the agreement is for but I would guess that it is a minimum of a year. perhaps longer.

My Kindle met it's tragic end over the weekend and I had to replace it. I ordered very early Tuesday morning, and my order confirmation expected it to be delivered Dec 29-31. I got an updated email last night that said Amazon managed to get some more wifi K3s in stock and that I would get mine by Christmas eve. There are two Amazon distribution centers less than 30 mins from my home, so I bet it comes today or tomorrow.

Last time I ordered a Kindle, it came the next day because it shipped from the distribution center near my house...

Same here! We don't really 'celebrate' Christmas around where I am, but it's a nice enough excuse for gift-giving. I 'gave' myself a K3, and couldn't be bothered to wrap it up. So from now till Christmas, the box just lies there, teasing, taunting, inviting...

When I was on Amazon in the middle of the night here in the US I noticed that both the wifi and 3g versions were offered on the home page. When I checked both links I found that the white 3g wouldn't ship until after Christmas, but the graphite and wifi versions would. When I checked back later I found no link to the 3g on the home page.

I ordered a Graphite 3G K3 with one day expedited delivery and got it yesterday, just in time for my long trip tomorrow. I nearly messed up because I was going to pick one up in Bestbuy during the weekend but it was sold out. I guess paying expedited delivery is the same amount as paying tax so it works out ok.

This is my year of the ereader. I got a 3G Classic nook, a Nookcolor and now a 3G Kindle. I am taking the K3 and Nookcolor with me on my trip. I am hoping to read and check emails using the K3 when I am in the boonies where WiFi and battery power is hard to find. When I get back to a nice civilized hotel, I'll use my NC to watch movies, surf the web and read magazines. This should be the best of both worlds for me.

Viziplex is the company that makes both regular (1st gen) e-ink screens and the newer Pearl screens. Proof is when you go to the about screen on the Sony PRS-950 (says Viziplex, when it's really the Pearl).

I'm afraid that's not right.

The name of the company that makes them is "eInk", and is owned by "Prime View International", better known as "PVI", in Taiwan.

The first generation of eInk screens (as used in devices such as the Sony PRS-500) didn't have any particular name.

The second generation of screens, as used in the Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, were "VizPlex" screens.

The third generation of screens, as used in the Kindle 3 and the current generation of Sony Readers, are STILL VizPlex screens, but are specifically called "Pearl" screens.

Now there's a 6-8 weeks delivery delay on the DXG to Australia (which probably means most/all international). Someone really underestimated demand.
