How would you like to see it formatted so that multiple-digit series numbers sort correctly? And what if the series number has a decimal place?
That's why the other field has the leading zeros and a decimal place. |

The best would be if you could choose the formatting via some options - I don't know if that could be in the plugin interface or in the Metadata Plugboard. So, if I know a certain series consists of less than 99 books, I would choose: 00. If it has decimals, 00.00. Less than thousand, 000 and so on. The series index sorting in iTunes is only useful within the same series, so no problem if one serie consists of 5 books and another series of, say 100. But otherwise, your first approach: "The Culture: 6" looks like a perfect solution. Last edited by paulfiera; 12-16-2010 at 10:09 AM. |

I'm confused as to why you need this at all.
If I look at a series in iTunes, sorted by name (using the plugboard template I provided), the series sorts correctly (due to the existing sort field). If your objective is to see the books sorted by series order, you can do that simply sorting by name. What am I missing? |

Title: 'Inversions' Series: 'The Culture' Index: '6' it would become Title: 'The Culture 6: Inversions' But maybe I'm wrong. |

Look at the attachment.
I can see the indexes of the series of 'The Culture' adding the Sort Name column - and you get the index right, but in case the book is not part of a series it's the book title that gets written to the Sort Number field. In case the book belongs to a serie, part of the series name gets written to Sort Number: 'Culture', from 'The Culture' + the index. |

FWIW I use the trackNumber field in iTunes for series index (Get Info -->Information) since the Information tab is the one iTunes populates automatically when you add a new book.
I believe it does not admit decimals though but it has not been a problem for me. Last edited by Coleccionista; 12-16-2010 at 10:37 AM. |

It's a point of view, I imagine you entered the series index in calibre and you are trying to port them to iTunes.
I entered the numbers in iTunes and a few months ago developed some hodgepodge of win scripts to transport iTunes metadata to calibre and back (since I am not using the "conect to iTunes" feature of calibre) |
