Down loading EPUB files to a Nook Color as of January 28, 2011
1. Using the NookColor Browser, down load file as EPUB file with or without images 2. File will be saved on the NookColor in the My Downloads folders in the books file 3. Attach the NookColor to the PC and view files 4. Open the books file in My Downloads folders, find the new download, copy it and put it in the B&N Down Load Folder, in the books file. Now it should be visible in the library. 5. Disconnect Nook from PC |

Good information. Maybe the next update will include a file manager. One shouldn't have to connect to a computer just to move a file.

The eBook manager calibre is good for managing files too (donateware.) You need a PC. Download your eBook then use calibre's Add Book icon. calibre can also convert to/from many formats. When you plug in the USB cable calibre discovers the nook(Color) and allows you to push the book down. The books show up on the main shelf. Back in calibre you can see what's on the nook and remove the file when you are done.
calibre also allows you to edit the metadata about the book to control the title, cover, etc. Good for dealing with "raw" data like text files and HTML pages. I had to load Adobe's Digitial Editions to manage protected files that I download from out library. It can manage downloaded non-protected files as well. |

I'd like to stick with just one program (Calibre or ADE) if I could if that's possible. I only have Calibre installed right now since I only have non-DRM books loaded. When I get around to figuring out how to access my local library I know I'll need ADE. Could I use it alone for everything? If not, are there any tricks or warnings about using 2 different programs to manage the content on one NC? |

calibre does a lot more including conversions from a variety of file types to EPUB. It also has support for newsfeed subscriptions. If all you do is move EPUB files from your PC to the nookColor ADE would most likely work.
I did notice that downloaded ADE books didn't appear on the shelves. Another post somewhere on the forum says you can drag/drop the downloaded book's folder to B&N\Downloads from MyFiles\Downloads using your PC but I would guess that would confuse ADE a bit as it would lose track of the download. Not a big deal. Unless you get in a rut I would guess that you will want calibre and ADE installed and occasionally do a USB connection to manipulate files. |

Thanks rheitzman. You seem to be saying Calibre would be sufficient. But I was under the impression that ADE was required to manage DRM for books borrowed from a public library. Thus, Calibre alone would not handle everything. Do I understand that correctly?

Library books have to be transferred to your computer over USB via ADE only. That's because this process applies the time expiration to the file. Other books with DRM such as those purchased from Borders or Sony can be transferred via calibre. But, calibre cannot transfer library books properly.

Thank you, Bookworm_Girl. I now know both are needed for a "full" reading and book support environment.
