Harry, how much tweaking/bending of the light stalk have you done? I've considered it but decided not to tamper at the moment. While I have just pushed on it, I really don't see much difference so have not tried any more forcible bends.

I found that a minor "tweak" of mine significantly improved the evenness of the illumination.

I have the lighted cover and have realized I can read longer with it without eye strain then my other book light which is a little bright. While the lighting isn't completely even it's really easy on the eyes compare to my Mighty Bright Travel Flex. So I prefer it for reading in the dark. Only issue has been it does annoy your bed partner if they sleep on the right side of the bed.

@kearalu Good to hear that you were able to resolve your Kindle problem by removing it from the Amazon cover; there seem to be more and more people having problems with the non-lighted cover. The problem appears to be that one of the metal hooks on the non-lighted cover is touching a component on the Kindle motherboard/logic board and causing the reboot, freezing problem. It is nice to see that Amazon is beginning to admit that there is a problem with the cover; I am sure they will redesign the cover to fix this problem as they will be losing $$ if they offer a free upgrade to the lighted cover for everyone that experiences it.

From what I have read, there is no similar problem with the lighted cover. Folks that have the lighted cover have nothing but positive things to say about it, so I would say you should accept Amazon's offer of the upgrade.

janvanmar -Until wvcherrybomb can post her pictures, here is a picture from the Amazon site of the lighted cover in use:

And there are some other pictures in this review - http://ireaderreview.com/kindle-3-la...-cover-photos/

As stated by wvcherrybomb, the area closest to the light source will probably always be a bit brighter than the rest, but if you don't think you can deal with the way the light on the lighted cover illuminates the screen, there are a lot of other lights available. If you do a search here, you will find quite a few threads about the different add-on book lights available for the Kindle. Here, for example, is a thread about the Octovo Solis light: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ht=book+lights

Thanks for posting the Amazon pic.

I tried to capture a realistic representation of how the light is dispersed across the screen and was unable to get anything close. The end products all looked similar to my avatar. I tried in the pitch dark, with and without flash and on several different settings. I'm afraid my picture taking skills are lacking.

To be honest for the price of the Amazon covers not lit, I think there are better options than GeeBee flap, for example, which allows you to get your Kindle and also inside pockets.

HarryT, Blossom, OakIris, wvcherrybomb and all others, thank you very much for your detailed information and tips. Based on your input, I think I will order the cover light and try it. In the worse case, it will be a bit of hassle returning it but perhaps with a bit of tweaking of the stalk I will be able to enjoy reading with it - I think it is worth trying now with the new information you provided!

In re light sources without hot spots; I'm waiting patiently for a cover with the facing surface of electroluminescent paper, like a Krill Light but larger. My Krill Light, that I use as a standlicht in the tent, years old and rock reliable. The Krill Light itself is just not enough light, but it is only 3 inches long and 3/4 inch in radius.

I have a krill light, too. Are they still around? It is an interesting lighting system.

I think the only way to know if you'll like the lighted cover is to try it out. I ended up not liking the uneven lighting and so am giving it to my sister as a Christmas present. But you really do need to use it yourself and see.

I have nothing against uneven lighting as it somehow feels more natural to me. The only thing I can't stand is cool light and was the only reason I replaced the otherwise lovely Octovo Solis on my K2.

I've already told you. I bent the metal stalk of the light so that it was at a slightly different angle.

I'm glad that we could help you with your decision. And I am sure you will enjoy your new cover; if not, hopefully the return process won't be too painful.

In the thread about the Octovo Solis light I had linked earlier, simplyparticular had written this (my emphasis):

Your experience is opposite of hers; I like a warmer light, as well, and I am considering getting one of these Solis lights, so your info is somewhat discouraging. Guess I'll have to see (no pun intended ) for myself.

Understand. But will it break ? Did you use heat etc.
I THINK a s-shape of the stalk would give best ligth, but ... I dont know how to make that permanent, without ruining the cover. Sorry, but so far, no matter what I do, the stalk "remembers" its shape.
