Actually, it's to compensate for the right to make a limited number of personal and private copies. It's true that such a levy is charged in some jurisdictions, but it gives me the right to copy that CD I just bought (a few times, if necessary, and even share such a copy with family or friends).

I'm sorry.
I didn't write it right.

I mean, it's normal for every human being to be forgiving with own faults, while being extremely harsh with others.

For example, if you have ever broken any law (e.g. by stripping DRM from a purchased epub) and you write that, you fall exactly in that category: human beings.

I mean, it's perfectly normal to see the straw in neighbour's eye, ignoring the beam in yours.

That's what the lady did.

On the other hand, to grab whatever you can is another natural behaviour, but it's not only human. It's natural for every living organism, from amoebas to the highest peaks of evolution....

Any evidence that it actually works? Or in Steve's world will we have to get special permission from a "trusted" source to open every file on our computers? A new economic order is coming. Deal.

It's not just Steve (Jobs), Bill too is moving in that direction.
There will be a future when everything on the computer will come from a controlled "Store", even personal files.

The music "industry" led the way by convincing its market that its product was worth only stealing. Make the analogy of an indie-author as a basement rockband. That is the future of authorship in the DRM age. Do they have the right? Absolutely. Do I have the ability? Absolutely.

The problem with that analogy is that the basement rock-band can make money and actualize themselves artistically via live performances. Authors generally can't do this. The coffee-club open-mike circuit is not particularly lucrative.

I for one think the patronage system should not be overlooked: commissions could be made and the results posted online for free. That would be a win-win scenario. The only catch would be the restriction of artistic freedom inherent in the necessity to please the patron. Of course, this restriction is already there in the current publishing era, where authors must try to please agents, publishers, and the fans.

Another possible solution would be publicly funded stipends for authors of merit. The competition for these stipends could have a very positive effect on the quality of the literature produced. The works themselves could then be distributed at cost.

"she refused to allow her latest novel to be released as an audiobook since the format is popular with file-sharers and also denied the publication of Russian and Chinese versions"

So instead of making some money out of audio books and the Russian and Chinese translations she is making no money? Am I missing something here?
