Actually, it looks like we all got sidetracked on fnatic's original post. He/She never asked about buying from other places, only about downloading. Therefore, DRM may not be an issue. So, let's resummarize:

1) Amazon books, no problem.
2) Non-DRM mobi, prc are no problem
3) Non-DRM just about anything else is easy to covert using Calibre
4) DRM (not from Amazon) is an issue (legal/ethical/technical) and only you can answer how big a problem that is for you in your jurisdiction.

In terms of buying books, if it is one of the many sources in category 2 or 3, then no problem.

Fnatic, we can probably give you more accurate statements if you care to describe the books you expect to download. I am sure that some books are difficult to get for the Kindle and others are difficult for other readers. I have found that everything I want is readily available on the Kindle.

Some book stores (ex: Fictionwise) even have a "Kindle format" on their multiformat list of ebook type choices. This works well, or even .mobi (non-DRM). All .pdf, .mobi, .prc, .txt and .html (rename as .txt) that I've purchased from anywhere work just fine on the Kindle. And .epub and .rtf file types can be converted very nicely to .mobi with Calibre (free and easy-to-use). Sometimes I convert pdf->rtf->mobi to get text reflow, but usually it doesn't matter to me.

Basically, all non-DRM types can be displayed with minor effort.
DRM (and Library ebooks?) would be an issue.
