The main thing that I like about my Kobo is the button placement. it is almost impossible to hit the side buttons accidently, and then all you have to do is hit back or left D pad button and you are back where you were.

Just wait, then.

Prices came down from $260 to $140 this year, thanks to the Kobo coming in at $150, and they're expected to drop. Maybe next year you'll find a reader at your price point.

Then again, there are some now, though they aren't e-ink, and you can find special deals on older e-ink models being closed out.

Many of the negative reviews are from people who were amongst the very first to order their units (I preordered mine in early April). The first customers were told their units would do more than they actually did, so........people were unhappy - including me. My issue was satisfactorily resolved in November, after many months of communicating with "the Kobo team". My new reader does everything I want a reader to do - I don't care about getting the next upgrade, more page turns, etc. I am completely happy with what I now have and I enjoy using the Kobo bookstore, I really enjoy the total Kobo package.

Unfortunately, looking at some of the negative reviews from early purchasers, Kobo was not consistent in working out a solution for their earliest supporters. The way I was eventually treated is the way the others should have been treated. I am now a yes Kobo instead of a no Kobo.

Well, it can use hyperlinks in newspapers and magazines. The top and bottom button clicks that make fonts bigger and smaller then are used to navigate through the hyperlinks. You change fonts, in those instances, through the menu. Hyperlinks are not underlined in newspapers etc. so I am not sure that most folks know they are usable.

I've asked Kobo about hyperlinks, and to the best of my understanding, they did not feel that hyperlinks were high on the "must have" list for folks. I think they are wrong, but what do I know. My suggestion was a menu choice to enable hyperlinks (or not) with that decision forcing the need to use the menu to change font size. I do not know if that part is doable. I also suggested that they change the CSS so that hyperlinks are underlined.

I have seen very few trolls on the board. What I have seen is people who come here very angry about something and seem to forget that they are coming into a community. People here respond in very helpful ways when the general tone of the message and the subject line is toned down a bit. When the most prominent part of the post is the anger, people focus more on that then they do on the actual issue at hand.

Let me assure, you I"m not a troll, but a hardworking, paying consumer. I felt at first as you, that Kobo was a nice easy, simple reading device........until.... I realized it was way overpriced, had the slowest page turns I'd ever seen, had a TERRIBLE battery life, and finally started freezing when it chose to.
Further, my experiences on returning it two days before the one month take back day came, were horrendous. I was forced to stand at Borders and make it fail, before they would issue my refund(cash) and only then because they wanted rid of me.
I still buy alot of novels from Kobo books and hope they come up with an updated product, I stand my opinion, that Kobo is pretty lame and alot of us relay these experiences to warn others. The whole thing with Borders and no outright refund is awful and people should know before they purchase.
I'm glad you are happy with your device, life is always nicer when our toys work. It's not just a question of money either. My inexpensive, Jetbook is still my "fave" and it never leaves my handbag..

I love my Kobo.

I hate Kobo's customer service (don't even bother e-mailing them; they don't respond).

@dixieknits--sorry you had such a bad experience with both your device and with Borders. Fortunately you found a machine you like, said what you felt you needed to, and now you can move on and enjoy reading on the Kindle and Jetbook.

From my perspective one I hate it thread (and one I love it thread) are probably sufficient on the board, but that's me.

@erictoma: Are there any readers that provide support in your language? I know that you are working hard to improve your English language skills, but it might be easier to be able to count on getting help in your primary language.

I posted not so long ago that I have read over 30 books with my Kobo (Ko1). That figure is about to go over 35.

I originally purchased my Kobo to be my "away" ereader, using my Sony PRS-300 as my main reader. Very quickly, the 6" screen and ease of use swapped the Kobo's role around.

There is no denying that people have had issues with the Kobo, but I have heard that a similar amount of people had issues with other ereaders as well.

Thank you for insulting my English language skills
I have downloaded at least 15 user guides in English and read them even if I'm stilling committing grammatical and spell errors.
I m not as "English" as you are but I can understand English, even In my job we talk only in English.

By the way your grammar site is very useful , I like it a lot.
Thank you

Kobo is a nice device for beginners to experience electronic books. It is the very reason I bought the device. While you seem to take offence at people that post negative things about the device, your own post takes the point to the other extreme. While I have been reading these forums since the original Kobo came out and I purchased it, I decided to make an account and post when I had something negative to say about the device. It is not because I hate it. (I like my Kobo, but Kobo as a company made many mistakes, especially to their original customers.) I made negative comments simply because up until that point when I registered to these forums not many people made the points that I was making and I think it is useful for visitors to this forum to know both the positives and negatives of the device and of the company that makes the device.

If you wish to only read the positives, then by all means, Kumbayah, hug your Kobo, ignore all the negative comments, and follow Alexander Turcic's advice. Some people, however, before they buy would like to see what current users think of the device, and hopefully these forums provide something useful for them.

I'm pretty sure you know that was not my intent.

Most folks who follow this board know that i am a huge Kobo fan. I have to come clean though, part of the attraction for me is that whilst it works well, out of the box, for most folks who just want to purchase and read novels, I do like the techie part of working with a new product that is still changing and growing. I like the challenge of looking for quirks and working through solutions. Kobo is a source of fun for me.

My husband has no complaints about Kobo. All he does is sync books onto his reader. He doesn't use Calibre, play with DRM, or sideload ePUB. He accepts whatever formatting he gets and is happy with the feature set. I believe the Kobo is perfect for him. I'm not so sure it would be perfect if he were picky, impatient, and not tech inclined. Add to that any difficulty with the language (and I say that as someone who was raised in a household where English was not primary or the language of everyday use) and Kobo might not be my first choice.

I know it was not your intent of course I have worked with English applications such Adobe Photoshop Illustrator, FreeHand, Quark Express, I have read all their user guides in English 10 years ago.
My only goal by purchasing an eReader is to practice English.
Kobo is still a good choise, but the last post has scared me, because the member has said : I realized it was way overpriced, had the slowest page turns I'd ever seen, had a TERRIBLE battery life, and finally started freezing when it chose to.
