Wifi to a studio 50 to 100 ft away should be no problem at all unless there are unusual building materials or location issues involved.
In my neighborhood of single family houses, all with good size lots (not stacked on top of each other), I see wireless signals from all over the 'hood... from hundreds of ft away. And the unprotected ones are usable. I have to be careful sometimes to make sure my wireless computers don't lock onto the wrong wifi signal! I use a free program called inSSIDer to sniff out wireless signals and display them on my wireless computers. I presently count 13 signals (including mine) in my 'hood that I am receiving. Fortunately, all but two have privacy enabled so connecting to the wrong wifi signal is not a problem I've run into for a long time. If you're on the fringes of 3G coverage as shown on the map, you may find coverage to be spotty, if you even have it at all. Perhaps if you have a friend with an AT&T cell phone, they could come to your house and see if they have cell coverage before you commit one way or the other. Those cell coverage maps are approximate at best! The good news is that if you get the 3G Kindle, it also includes wifi. Since I have good wifi coverage, I went with the wifi only version. That being said, this was a very educational thread for me to read as I (anxiously) await the arrival of my K3/wifi. It helped me understand how the actual file transfer options work. As I understand it, any DRM'd file is restricted to the 3 choices as outlined by DialDepp. But if the file is not DRM'd, you can copy from within the PC just based on the file downloaded by the K4PC app. Do I understand correctly? |

If you are out of the 3G coverage but still have AT&T (or whatever is the provider) signal (2G coverage) the Kindle 3G modem will fallback to the EDGE/GPRS with slower speed. In fact my 3G Kindle is on 2G half of the time. I think the 3G version of Kindle is a good choice.

Thanks again to all who offered advice! I have ordered the Kindle 3G because I don't see another need for a wireless setup. I'm still confused about the Kindle account with Amazon. I have 3 books on my K4PC now. So when I get the Kindle, I register it and then I have to redownload those three books but this time with a "key" for the Kindle right?
Or when I get the Kindle will it just synchronize with what's on the PC. I knew there was a synch for bookmarks but does it apply to keeping the same titles downloaded? Will I ever need to connect Kindle and PC by usb? Should I just shut up and wait till I have the Kindle in my hands? ![]() |

The Kindle's WiFi reception is not great. My WiFi router is at the back of my house, which means that the signal has to pass through three brick walls to reach my bedroom. The Kindle sees no WiFi signals at all there (and neither does the iPad, as a matter of interest). My notebook PC, which presumably has a better antenna, gets a weak but usable connection.

Thanks for clarifying the wifi reception. I assume you have a screen on the K3 that will show you all the WLANs it is receiving so you can pick out the one to connect to? If so, I'll be curious to compare the K3's reception to that of my laptop.

Yes, that's exactly how it works. You get shown a list of all the WiFi networks it can see, and you choose the one that you want to connect to.

Lynn I don't have K4PC but I am assuming that if those three books are showing on your Manage Your Kindle page then when you get your kindle they will download to your kindle, if not you can send them to your kindle yourself from that page. You won't need a key or anything like that
You will have a manage your kindle page as soon as you have ordered your kindle Last edited by Josieb1; 12-05-2010 at 02:32 PM. |

When you get your Kindle, all your ebooks that were delivered to your K4PC will be listed under "Archived Items" on your Kindle. Just select any of those you want on your Kindle and they'll be delivered immediately. And vice versa: From now on, by default your new ebooks will be delivered to your Kindle. But if you want to also read one on your PC, go to Archived Items in K4PC and request delivery there also. |

I say grab a wireless router. They're pretty cheap. You can easily get one for under $40. Once you have it, you'll likely find other uses for it.
