What ever happened to the mantra, "Don't feed the trolls." Words to live (or type) by. Ignore them and they'll go away.

That said, I agree with the OP. Why shouldn't people be entitled to express an opinion about something not directly relevant to them? And the attitude of, "If you don't agree with the collective opinion we'll stomp you" is very unfortunate in any public forum, because it does tend to stifle anything but groupthink. If you feel you must engage with someone you think is a troll (and again, why bother?), attack them on the merits of their post, not on what you perceive to be their motives or their personality.

do you read? more importantly do you read for content? this is over an issue where Amazon made a mistake. they admit they were in error. it was a one time oops. people are coming in for advice on purchases, one of the few things they hear is oh! Amazon can take things off of your reader! it's not going to happen again. it is important to get the CORRECT information out. when people insist on continuing to troll their way through an issue and continue to feed bad information, it needs to be corrected.

how's this to put it into perspective? I don't like Obama, but everytime I see the whole "he isn't a citizen" issue, it makes me see red and I correct it. should that be ignored?

See, this is what I mean. Just rude, frankly. Why shouldn't I be able to comment without occasioning a comment on my literacy? I do read, as is evident. Moreover, I read the OP for content, which was a broadbased commentary on pointing fingers, and I'm in full agreement with his post as written. I didn't turn it into a single and obviously highly personal issue.

As perhaps some need to get over the Amazon debacle regarding 1984, perhaps you need to step back from this issue. Jest sayin'. Seriously, people in search of advice can read the totality of responses and get a pretty good idea of what's going on and what is germane and what is not.

if you perceive it as rude, it's your own baggage. it's called being direct and not pussyfooting around a subject. the 1984 issue, and let's be clear here, that is the ONLY thing I am discussing, has been discussed to death. it is trolling, and this adds to it

I agree that the "1984" incident was overblown, but an explanation of what happened is all that's needed for an individual to decide whether to go with a Kindle or Kindle books, IMO. I'll take a reasoned explanation any day, over cries of trolling. The former appeals to my sense of logic.

If I were worried about a repeat of "1984," I wouldn't be persuaded for or against Amazon just because someone cried "troll."

it gets explained, and explained, and explained again. the trolls are like playing little whack-a-mole games. they keep popping up and insisting that it is an ISSUE

For some people, it's an issue. We don't all have to agree.

This is the thread:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=109451

He was asking if he had to let Amazon spy on his reading. Your reply to him was "why did you get a kindle?" which was obviously a troll post designed to stir up enough hatred for people to pick up their pitchforks. Then someone else said that it isn't possible for Amazon to see what books you read and it isn't possible for them to remove books from your Kindle.

If it makes you happy I will stay out of YOUR forum, but I agree with the OP that such pitchforking behaviour is detrimental to the whole site.

I 100% agree with the OP. Some people take "negative" comments on their device personally and become rude and agressive. Sometimes the "offensive" statement looks innocent enough until someone choses to take it personal and then reacts in ways which are far worse than trolling.
People are allowed to have different opinions and preferences. And if I feel personally offended if someone says they prefer other devices over the one I own or don't like certain features, then maybe I'm the one with the problem.

I think the sentiment of the OP is good - that not everyone named a troll is in fact a troll. But at the same time I think people should call a spade a spade.

Just a little reminder. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. You don't have to agree with everything said, but please remain respectful and observe our guidelines.

Calling someone a troll merely because you disagree with that person is NOT OK. I ask everyone - respectfully - to use this label with absolute care; otherwise it will be perceived as a mere attempt to insult fellow members, and we will not allow this here.

Thank you!

I'm calling the behaviour, not the person troll like. when the same question (1984) gets asked over and over again, and the same people that already have proven that they have an antagonistic attitude towards a particular device pop up with "oh but they DO do that!" that is trollish behaviour and intended to deliberately steer people away from the Kindle. I'm tired of it. and I also am not going to run whining to a mod every time I see it. I don't know why we cannot be self policing unless it gets out of line

If we want to have a detailed discussion of what actually happened in the 1984 situation we can, although its been done quite thoroughly in the past. Troll like behavior involves waving a red flag with no substance, just trying to get a reaction.

If you want to talk about the difficulties of getting library books onto the Kindle then you have an issue that indicates why someone might want a Sony instead. On the other hand, complaining about 'evil Amazon stealing our 1984' is just trying to raise tempers. It would be funny to compare the 'evil Amazon' comments from the 1984 debate with the 'evil Amazon' comments from the public domain books on Amazon brouhaha.

Perhaps Amazon shouldn't try to steal our books out from under us then. Just sayin.
