Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I will probably root it for her....one more question on that note...can a rooted Nook Color download Kindle?

I installed the Kindle app and it works fine, although I don't intend to use it out of respect for B&N (just wanted to see if it worked).

That and, in a lot of ways, the B&N reader is better. It has more font and color options, and the built-in dictionary is pretty nice (could be slightly better). The Kindle application also prevents me from tapping the screen to change page in a handful of my books (I have to tap an empty area of the screen as tapping text brings up the cool word selection).

I also miss Aldiko's feature of displaying progress within the current chapter. However, I find that I actually like the nook way even more: tap goto and check the page number of the next chapter. (Obviously a personal preference, but I guess I still have some holdover feelings from paper books. )

On the other hand, the lack of a page transition is brutal when tapping/swiping to change page.

Just judging from videos and my own iPad experience, the NC reading app probably has better features than the iPad. I will only be able to do a comparison once my NC arrives some time next week (hopefully).

How honest of you! I intend to do the same.

I also like that you played with the NC and plan to put away until Christmas. I also plan to do this, but I need to test it out and make sure it's working properly before my deadline for returning it is up. Would hate to boot it up on Christmas morning only to find out there's a problem, and then forced to get a refurb or something under warranty.

Good luck putting it away for christmas! I convinced my wife to let me buy it early (so that I could get it rooted before B&N had a chance to do update the firmware).

There is NO WAY I'm putting it back in the box!!!

If you buy from a B&N store you can get a Gift Receipt, which gives you 60 days to return it. You have to specifically request it though. I think Best Buy is similar.
