My uneducated guess matches yours

[Hence why I and others await the day of the much-longed for feature controlling metadata download that allows us to be sure our carefully constructed series data does not get trashed should we choose to populate it first.]
I'd like this, too. I need more Qt skills (and time) to get there. I wrote the "Don't overwrite author/title" option, which is a crude form of metadata fetch control, and I'm reasonably comfortable with the metadata handling from writing the Merge code.

Charles has written some Qt code that I may be able to copy, but I keep thinking if I try it, I'll be just finishing some crude initial code when Charles or Kovid posts polished final code. I've kind of been just watching/waiting thinking I'll steal their work on fine control for metadata fetching and use it for fine control on metadata Merging

I'd find this very annoying, if not easily tweaked or optioned to turn off. I use the empty book option for testing and rely on it having an Unknown author that is overwritten during a safe-merge (merge and keep others) to make a copy of the record I want to do tests on.

I tag it "MultiBook," put it at series_index 00, Enter the book titles in the Comments (for searching) and sometimes also add (Omnibus) after I've done a metadata fetch.
