Hi

Open the run dialog (Windows Key + r)
Open a command prompt (enter cmd.exe and click ok)
type the following:

cd "c:\Program Files\Calibre2"
calibre-debug.exe -g

When the error occurs see if additional info is displayed in the command prompt windows. If so, attach the results here or log a bug on the calibre web site.

Also, have you been using the Kobo desktop?

Tim
Thanks for your reply, Tim . I appreciate the help!

My Kobo seems to have multiple personalities. Today and last night it's behaving- no further error messages.
I did another reset and had to contact Adobe to allow more re-authorizations (major pain!) and reloaded some books and stories. 3 of the stories I uploaded did not show up on the Kobo so I reloaded them and they do now.
The only other problem (so far) is that the covers of some books are not showing up on the Kobo.

I'm uploading content a little at a time so as not to overload it.
If I do run into any more errors I will run the command you gave me and post the result.

Well I was assuming that this thread, being in the Kobo forum, would be read by a Kobo rep.

Although Kovid considers MR to be the "official" forum for Calibre, you will find forums for devices do not have that connection. They have been set up by the forum users and moderators for the convenience and community building of people with a particular interest.

As it happens, when time allows, Kobo staff do look in and help out, but it is not anything that we can expect to happen--particularly at busy times like this, when Kobo is working to finalize some much anticipated updates. Some of the people who post here also will pass things on to Kobo staff they have contact with, but we get busy, too. In my case, I have not been around as much as usual because I had a death in my family.

most of the kobo/indigo people are clearly identified as such. The others are generally just very pasionate people who love their device. Dunno about the other groups. I think it's pretty cool that they do take the time to come out to the forums to get peoples feedback and to try and help if they can, when they really don't have to (ie - they could restrict contact to their site only). I personally appreciate the help I've been given in the past.

cheers.

I didn't mean to imply that I expected to hear from a Kobo rep just that if one was around he/she would probably check out the Kobo threads.
And I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, taming.

Yeah BUT, people aren't just using Calibre to 'manage' their files. They are using it for other reasons (like stripping the DRM). What effect does that have on files that are copied to the Kobo? Does THAT void your warranty?

Personally, I am staying clear of Calibre. I've seen waaaay too many posts about problems. I use ADE and my library books work fine. Why complicate things? I like to keep it simple!

Pokee; I hate to say it, but Calibre does NOT strip DRM. Yes there are third party add-ons that do, but they are not from Calibre.

Huh, where did you get that idea?

Calibre is a legit program and is included in the Kobo Official User Manual as a method of transferring books to the Kobo. It does not strip DRM.

In some countries, removing DRM (aka digital locks) for personal use/backups is not illegal. Providing the tools to do it is another thing. Kovid is always very clear that he will not personally help people strip DRM. Calibre has a large user community who develop plugins and recipes for the device that can do some amazing things, but the program itself is a library manager and a great way to transfer books to devices like Kobo.

@Joyful--thanks for the kind words. We all know, I guess, that someday our parents will die, but it's still never easy.

Still no joy as far as covers of most of my books on the Wifi Kobo. I get a white page with the title or a generic cover that bears no resemblance to the cover of the book on the Kobobooks site.

I use Calibre and have made sure the cover shows up in the metadata but still no covers on the Kobo. When I look on the device within Calibre there is a small thumbnail of the book cover on most of my books but a generic cover or none at all shows on the Kobo itself when I disconnect. I don't remember that being the case prior to all my trouble.

I checked some of these books in ADE and no covers there either so I'm wondering if this is a Kobobooks problem. (I also still have on my computer the reader program from Sony because I bought a Sony initially but took it back - too much glare. The covers don't show on there either.)

Covers do show up in the Kobo desktop software but that program is just too frustrating to use and I can't find any answers to my questions on how to do some things within it.
I wanted to reload only a couple of my books back into the Kobo after my last factory reset (instead of synching it with all 54 books and risk overwhelming it) but found no way to do that with the Kobo software.
Finally figured out that I had to remove books from 'I'm reading' in My Library on the website to remove them from the desktop app but now I can't figure out how to get them to show up again (in the Kobo software).

I just can't see how that software is in any way helpful in managing my books. Had the Kobo desktop software been my only choice I would never have purchased a Kobo.

Is anyone else experiencing a lack of book covers?

The bookcover function on Calibre actually only loads onto the reader if the book is DRM free. Covers are a big problem for all readers--and it is not the fault of the device. Just as authors often have rights sold region by region, so often do the artists that create the covers. So, for example, the publisher may have the right to display the cover art for sales/marketing anywhere, but not to actually sell the cover art as part of the ebook.

Most of my books came with a "generic" book cover. I was able to change the covers in calibre without having to strip the drm...not sure why you can't Maybe ask someone in the calibre forum?

As far as putting a book back on the desktop app: Log into your kobo account on their website, go into your purchased books and click on the book you want on the desktop app. After it opens to the book info go back to the desktop app and click 'update'. I just did it, so I know it works.

I first noticed the cover problem after I bought the Millenium trilogy from Kobo. The epub files I downloaded had generic 'Penquin' covers, but the Kobo-format files I synced onto my Kobo had the nice pretty cover art seen at bookstores everywhere. (Yep, I had two different copies on my Kobo, and it was pretty easy to tell them apart.) The cover art is in the images directory, of course, so I could use Calibre to copy it into my epub file - if I get that annoyed and/or ambitious.
