Try not rebooting every now and then... You'll find that most apps and installers that "require" rebooting actually work just fine without rebooting. It's a stupid stone-age precaution that just won't die...

In fact, the more or less only thing in Vista and XP that actually DOES require rebooting on installation are hardware abstraction thingies and driver thingamajigs.

No it doesn't. Once in a while the current app loses focus and gets it back some time later. any chars entered are of course lost.

Does it happen with something beside Zone Alarm?

Nope.
Happens only with the newest update also. The one now showing a Z icon.

I hear ya. I am using vista and while playing a MMORPG, occasionally a popup stating that media center is connecting to update the program guide, pops up. I inadvertently hit a key while playing and Media Center starts up. In the meantime I am frozen out of the game till media center finishes loading and I exit it only to find my character taking a dirtnap.

I know, and that's why I almost never reboot XP, except for that annoying Windows "must reboot" prompt bugs the hell out of me. ... that or when I dual-boot to ubuntu.

I'm with you, never had this problem. It seems that OSX always leaves (default mode?) the active window/app on top, giving you an alert sound (or screen-flash), allowing you to make the decision about who gets your attention and when...
