I noticed the same thing! I've purchased warranties for the last 3 items bought. I'll do the same for the NOOKcolor before the end of the return period. $30 bucks to walk in with a defective unit and walk out with a replacement. No hassle whatsoever.

Square Trade has better warranty pricing than retailers. Right now, you can get a 3 year warranty with accidental damage for the Nook Color for only $30.

Also as far as BB goes, I have searched high and low and never found a way to buy a cheaper laptop than to buy one that is ON SALE at BB. New sales start on Sundays, so it's good to check the website early Sunday morning and find something that has the specs you want and pay a lot less than most places and you can buy their warranty (even offer damage warranties), so you don't have to mail off a laptop and pray it comes back someday. I bought the damage warranty last time, as I've had enough cracked screens to warrant it.

Just picked up a Nook Color at my local Best Buy, after being given a ship date of at least Dec 3 through BN.com. The best way to ensure availability and avoid the sometimes moronic salespeople is to order online and check 'store pick-up', which makes it rather painless. Plus I got 5% back from my credit card for ordering through bestbuy.com, which pays for part of the sales tax. Now I can use my BN gift cards for their cafe, getting an hour a day of free reading and hopefully some of the free cafe goodies I've heard about.

B&N stores, though, (at least the one I went to) are offering a gift card deal that works something like a rebate. When you buy $300 worth of gift cards, you get 3 $10 cards free. My NC and cover, with sales tax, came to just over $300. I bought the NC with the gift cards and have $30 worth of gift cards to spend in a few weeks.

Granted it's only a deal if you're going to spend money at B&N anyway, but it works out for me.

I considered that, but quickly realized that I'd lose the protections provided by my credit card (additional 1 year warranty, theft/loss protection, annual rebate). I'd also lose the advantages of buying from Best Buy (30 day return policy, $5 from Reward Zone).

Together, these protections and added value add up to more than the $20 I'd save from a B&N purchase.
